This marks the beginning of Graveland's early artistic consistency as well as Darken's first comprehension of the idea that there is this thing called "structure" and that musicians like to use it from time to time.
In 1995, Graveland released Thousand Swords, which was for Graveland what Blood Fire Death was for Bathory: the fruitful meeting point of two distinct phases of a band's career and the pinnacle of the band's material (to date).
Graveland's political inclinations were, for the most part, contained to extra-musical statements made by Darken and Capricornus or subtle lyrical allegories.

 Graveland - Black Metal
Graveland play modern fl metal with pulsing one-two beats, a derivation of techno, and long sequences of patterning and rhythmic development underneath diffused, distorted, spectral vocals.
Review: A very early slice of Graveland is seen here after the widespread confusion over these demos caused the band to relent and put out their second compilation of early recordings, showing the band in 1993 at a primitive state of fusion between hardcore and epic "Hammerheart" style melodic but blasting fl metal.
Similarly vocals emulate the Bathory style in that era, as do patterns of cadence emerging in riff and muscular strumming that is strangely precise for a band this early in its growth, but the first four tracks on this release are unusually feral yet ambitiously majestic in their capture of atmosphere and mood.

As one of the earliest and most prominent figures in Polish fl metal, Graveland has stood the test of time for 15 years and never backed down from its ideology.
Rob Darken, the sole member and mastermind behind Graveland, uses every event and action in his life as fuel for the music of Graveland; almost as if to use the music as a means of conveying himself to others.
Graveland began as traditional Polish fl metal in 1992 but evolved into what Darken refers to as "Pagan Hammer Metal", a style that revolves around epic metal arrangements that often include fl metal overtones with choirs and pagan instruments.

Even by typical fl metal standards, since their inception in 1992 Poland's Graveland have managed to piss off an inordinately large number of people because of their excessively right-wing (read: Nazi-sympathizing) politics.
With bassist Karcharoth and drummer Capricornus contributing to the band's rather sloppy, lo-fi approach (akin to primitive Bathory), subsequent efforts like 1996's The Celtic Winter, 1998's Following the Voice of Blood, and 2001's Prawo Stali (all released by the No Colours label) were met with understandable boycotts by the mainstream media.
