It is surrounded by a double circuit of ramparts and by a tidal moat.
The greater part of the population of the commune of Gravelines dwells in the maritime quarter of Petit-FortPhilippe at the mouth of the Aa, and in the village of Les Huttes (to the east of the town), which is inhabited by the fisher-folk.

Gravelines (Dutch: Grevelingen) is a small historic town and commune on the northern coast of France on the river Aa 15 miles (25 km) south west of Dunkirk, in the Nord département.
In the early 12th century, Saint-Omer was an important port in western Flanders.
However receding sea gradually cut it off from the English Channel, resulting in the construction of a canal to the new coast at what is now Gravelines.
