The Battle of Gravelotte (August 18, 1870) was a battle of the Franco-Prussian War named after Gravelotte, a village in Lorraine between Metz and the former French-German frontier.
The conflict was between the Germans under King William of Prussia and the French under Marshal Bazaine.

All being ready we took one of the roads from Pont-à-Mousson to Rézonville, which is on the direct road from Metz to Châlons, and near the central point of the field where, on the 16th of August, the battle of Mars-la-Tour had been fought.
This place was on some high ground overlooking the villages of Rézonville and Gravelotte, about the centre of the battlefield of Mars-la Tour, and from it most of the country to the east towards Metz could also be seen.
About noon, after many preliminary skirmishes, the action was begun according to the plan I have already outlined, the Germans advancing their left while holding on strongly with their right, and it was this latter wing (the First Army) that came under my observation from the place where the king's headquarters were located.

On 6 September 1944, during an attack near Gravelotte, France, Lieutenant Cornell displayed outstanding courage and bravery when his platoon was subjected to enemy anti-tank fire, artillery, mortar, machine gun and rifle fire.
However, most of this was not an action in town, so that the reference in the citation to a street makes this seem less likely as the location and date for the citation.
Cornell was later wounded at Gravelotte, France on 6 September 1944, in an action for which he received the Distinguished Service Cross (click here to see the Distinguished Service Cross citations).

 Effects
After swift victories at Mars la Tour and Gravelotte, the Prussian army's huge blow to the French was at Sedan.
The town fell on September 2, 1870 with over 120,000 men lost on both sides, with as many French prisoners (including Louis Napoleon).
This isolation of France ended at the same time as the constitution in 1917 when the Great War in Europe started to turn against Germany.

Yet the three great historical battles -- Gravelotte, Potomac, Borodino (near Moscow) -- each lasting three days, and in which there were respectively 90,000, 100,000, and 110,000 men killed and wounded on both sides -- these battles were child's play in comparison to modern warfare, as we saw it in Manchuria.
The ravages caused by shells, thrown with accuracy of aim at a distance of three, four, or five miles, by batteries the position of which cannot be made out, as they use smokeless powder, are unimaginable.
