Gravesend was one of the original towns in the Dutch colony of New Netherland and became one of the six original towns of Kings County in colonial New York.
Gravesend is notable for being a founded by a woman, Lady Deborah Moody; a patent was granted to the English settlers by Governor Kieft, December 19, 1645.
Gravesend Town encompassed 7000 acres in southern Kings County, including the entire island of Coney Island, which was originally the town's common lands on the Atlantic Ocean, divided up, as was the town itself, into 41 parcels for the original patentees.

Brooklyn's most beloved and cherished institution had left, and the move is cited by some historians as one of the catalysts for the decline of Brooklyn in the 1960s and 1970s.

Gravesend was founded in 1643 on a site marked by the square bounded on three sides by the Old Village Road at McDonald Avenue and Gravesend Neck Road.
Until her death in 1659, Lady Deborah was a leader in the settlement, and even the testy Peter Stuyvesant sought her opinion from time to time.
Lady Deborah is buried in the little cemetery opposite the house in the southwest corner of the square.

One of the oldest neighborhoods in Brooklyn, Gravesend was settled in 1643 by Lady Deborah Moody, who was seeking a religious haven after falling out of favor with the Puritans of Lynn, Massachusetts.
Few remnants of the original village remain after 350+ years, as you may expect, but amazingly, the original square town plan as devised by Lady Moody is still reflected in the configuration of Village Roads North, South and East as well as Van Sicklen Street.
Gravesend Neck Road trails off northeast from the original town, and Lake Place winds off to the west.

``Gravesend was the only permanent settlement in America's early colonization period to have been initiated, planned, and directed by a woman,'' wrote Thomas J. Campanella in the fall, 1993, Landscape Journal.
In one of her last acts of dissension, Moody invited them to Gravesend, and the first Quaker meeting in the colonies was held in her house that year.
