Gravis Ultrasound - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gravis Ultrasound or GUS is a sound card for the IBM PC compatible system platform, made by Canadian-based Advanced Gravis Computer Technology Ltd. It was very popular in the demo scene in the 1990s, due to its superior sound quality compared to similarly-priced soundcards of its time.
Gravis realized early on that the demo scene support could be a sales booster and they gave away 6000 cards for free to the most famous scene groups and people in the scene.
If Advanced Gravis had been able to hold out for a few more years, until Windows 95 finally supplanted DOS as a platform for gaming, then the story would have had a happy ending, because the burden of supporting it would have been carried by its Windows driver alone.

The Gravis Ultrasound MAX was not only not reviewed, but it wasn't even considered (as per the third column, page 168).
Not only does the Ultrasound MAX meet all your specifications for a multimedia sound board (as listed in the second column, page 168), but it has several other features that increase its value for both business, composing, and entertainment needs.
Possibly the most important feature of the Gravis Ultrasound is the way it outputs digitized sound: It's internal DSP always runs at CD quality (44.1 KHz 16-bit stereo sound), and any sound that doesn't fit that format is automatically interpolated to fit that high rate.

The "UltraSound Plug & Play" is the newest version of the "UltraSound" card from Advanced Gravis that we reviewed over a year ago.
Designed specifically for the Windows 95 environment, this new sound card was supposed to make the inevitable configuration an ancient nightmare, but unfortunately, as you will see by reading this article, the reality is somehow different with several problems that may be harassing enough to lead you to another choice.
The card is also fully compatible with the DirectSound applications which isn't the case for the "UltraSound", and is capable of full duplex to play and record simultaneously which is required for such applications as Internet Phone.

OS/2 Soundcard Summary - Sound Boards: Advanced Gravis
The Gravis boards get essentially no support from Gravis itself, aside from an ancient and incomplete driver that was once released for some now-discontinued boards (see below).
Gravis has "released alpha-level" drivers (an oxymoron), and judging by the documentation, they're OK for OS/2-only use, but DOS (and presumably Windows) programs will cause problems.
These boards from Gravis utilize the AMD InterWave chipset, which is supported in OS/2 only by the shareware Manley drivers.
