Gravity's Rainbow - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gravity's Rainbow is a novel written by Thomas Pynchon and first published in 1973.
Gravity's Rainbow is in four parts, each made up of a number of episodes whose divisions are marked by a series of squares.
Gravity's Rainbow also draws heavily on themes that Pynchon had probably encountered at his work as a technical writer for Boeing, where he worked on the Minuteman missile.

 N. Spencer: Clausewitz and Pynchon   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
In Gravity's Rainbow, Pynchon represents the transpolitical by extrapolating the implications of historians' speculations, and suggesting that both war and politics are ruses or fronts for the reconfiguration of power.
The textual hypothesis of Gravity's Rainbow is that war structures are not simply extended into the phase of pure war, but that they are fulfilled in the absence of combat.
In Gravity's Rainbow, this dynamic is exemplified by Enzian's illumination in the disused and decrepit Jamf Ölfabriken Werke AG (a Nazi oil refinery), an experience which intensifies Sasuly's ruminations on the IG munitions installations and Motor Works in Bavaria.

Pynchon - Papers: "Amazon.com and the Democracy of Opinion"
A summary of Gravity's Rainbow plot is nearly impossible, as the narrative is often non-linear, there are over a hundred characters, and the book's eight-hundred pages seem to conspire in confounding the reader.
This notion is in fact thematically linked with Gravity's Rainbow; the novel discusses the Puritan dialectic of "elect" and "preterite" (those destined for salvation and the masses who are not) by making a hero of the preterite, just as Marx made a hero of the lower-class.
Gravity's Rainbow is a unique beast in terms of review because many consider any review of it futile or worthless.

If Farben's wartime factories included a synthetic rubber plant at Auschwitz, where 30,000 inmates worked until they died or were deemed unfit for work and sent to the gas chambers.
An excellent resource for Gravity's Rainbow is Steve Weisenburger's A Gravity's Rainbow Companion and, of the many excellent books of criticism, you'll find Thomas Moore's The Style of Connectedness: Gravity's Rainbow and Thomas Pynchon and Kathryn Hume's Pynchon's Mythology well worth reading.
If you can locate Richard Sasuly's IG Farben, long out of print, you'll find that it fills in much about that monster-concern as his book is considered to have been a major source of the IG-Farben-related information in GR.

A catch mechanism holds each ball in place alone the rail; when the catch is released all the balls are launched off the end of the rail.
The balls that are the highest go out the farthest, but regardless of the speed at which it is launched, each ball falls in a parabolic arch (thus the name "Gravity's Rainbow.") If the rubber cups are set in the proper positions they catch each ball, proving that the arc of each ball is predictable.
It is possible to move the launch point of each of the five balls and the position of each of the five cups.

All of the themes of Pynchon's stories and first two novels reappear and are elaborated upon in Gravity's Rainbow.
The rapid, mindless depletion of the earth's resources, hastening the process of entropy, is what the war was about, rather than ideology or morality.
Pynchon steps outside the framework of the war at one point to assert directly that living in the last half of the twentieth century (being a part of what Pynchon calls "The System") is like being a passenger on a bus (consumin.....

Gravity’s Rainbow launches five small balls into five rubber cups with amazing accuracy.
The exhibit employs a steel raceway, whose angle can be adjusted up or down, to vary the distance each ball travels.
One can experiment with all elements of the exhibit: the angle of the rail, the number of balls, and the launch and landing points of the balls.

As Gravity's Rainbow, or at least, this first section, are about the rise and fall of the V-2 rocket (quite literally), it is no wonder that the figure in the tarot card is both pointing up and down.
Of course, we may think of the most famous picture of Plato and Aristotle, and that's part of it too, but on the most basic level, there's a rocket up in the air and it's coming down to Earth.
For the most part, this represents the greatest tension in the novel Gravity's Rainbow.

From the dub echoes of "Everybody Lay Down," to the eastern overtones of "Disconnected," to the shuffling bar blues of "Crazy" (featuring Neil Giraldo's Hendrix-soaked wah-wah guitar), Pat Benatar continues to redefine her sound in a '90s context.
Where her early hits featured a huge, metallic wall of sound, GRAVITY'S RAINBOW favors a spare, reverberant production, with plenty of ambient space to showcase the sound of her talented band.
And where Benatar often has chosen to hide behind her characters and glory in her rock and roll voice, love songs like "You and I" show her peeking out a bit from that tough girl personna.
