Grawp is a giant who, although standing 16 feet tall, is short by giant standards.
Hagrid brought Grawp back to Hogwarts with him after his visit to the giants in Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, mainly because the other giants were picking on him because of his height.
Grawp was rather violent over the course of Order of the Phoenix; however, in Half-Blood Prince, he became more docile.

I never really thought about Grawp having any further significance (other than to show how stupid Hagrid can get about big, dangerous things)...okay, yes, Grawp is Hagrid's brother, and they did have a sweet scene at Dumbledore's funeral, but I'm not really fond of his character.
I have no doubt Grawp and the giants were introduced for a purpose but the books give very little clues what this purpose is.
Grawp’s special feature is his immense strength and immunity from a lot of spells.

In Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix we find out that though his mission, despite early promise, was unsuccesful—though he does return with his half-brother, Grawp.
Harry and Hermione agree to take care of Grawp in Hagrid's absence—Hagrid fears (correctly) that he is to be driven out by Dolores Umbridge.
Grawp later helps Harry and Hermione, when they are under attack by centaurs.

Grawp is introduced in OotP, and, by the end of the book, we find out that Grawp was involved in several things.
Also, Grawp is at \r\nBirthdate: Dumbledore is 157 according to the Lexicon, so that would make his birthday in the year 1840.
Grawp MAY have a key role in the next book, but if he does, I'm thinking it will be something to do with his good knowledge of the forest.

Its interesting what you say Blaise about Grawp possibly being the downfall of Hagrid - especially looking at how naive Hagrid is. This could be a possibility if Grawp becomes involved in the battle between good and evil and is killed, and Hagrid does something silly (or more silly than usual) in his grief.

Grawp is a giant, and will be able to help harry with sumthing very important i believe in the next book...
I believe now that Grawp can speak he might be able to translate for the order making it a lot easier to persuade the Giants to come to the good side.

I think Grawp is too much to put into a movie simply to act as a "diversion" from the plot.
As for Grawp, well I dont know about anyone else, but the whole Harry/Cho thing is just, well gag me mushy romance crap.
Again in my opinion, Harry/Cho is much more important to Harry's journey as a person and a hero than Grawp is. It's his first experience of romance, and it teaches him some valuable lessons.

The point of taking Harry and Hermione to visit Grawp when Hagrid did was that everyone else would be at the match, as it was for the Cup, and no one would notice them sneaking into the Forest.
So, when Harry was going to use physical force to attack Grawp, I feel it's safe to say he was definitely trying to protect Hermione there as well.
I got the impression that he was mad because of Hermione's reaction to the gift, not necessarily that Grawp gave her one.
