  GRAY in HORSES
The reason behind this was that most people will look at a donkey and say "it's gray", and secondly that it was believed to be a form of dun (due to the fact that many had darker heads, and 90% had a cross and stripe: this is a dun factor in horses).
GRAY in horses is an animal which is born dark, and gradually the entire haircoat changes to white.
GRAY can be a homozygous gene (meaning both parents were gray and the offspring has 2 doses of the gray gene, one from each parent) or heterozygous (just one gray gene).

Gray (horse) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Gray horses are usually born bay, chestnut, or fl, then white hairs begin to appear at or shortly after birth and "gray out" the horse.
Graying therefore cannot be used to approximate the age of a horse except in the broadest of terms: a very young horse will never have a white coat (unless it is a true white horse), while a horse in its teens usually is completely grayed out.
Thus rose gray horses have a slight pinkish tinge to their graying coat, due to the fact that they are born a chestnut or bay color.

Appaloosa Horses   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
Gray is considered a color modifier because, when the gene is present, it changes the original basecoat color of a horse.
Gray foals are usually born their original base colors, such as chestnut, bay or fl, then the base colors fade to gray over time.
Gray is a dominant gene, which means if a horse carries the gene, then that horse also expresses the color: Gray horses are the only horses that carry the gray gene.

Appaloosas at Ehlers Crossing -- Grays and Non-Appaloosa Roans
The gene for gray G is prevalent in the Percheron breed of draft horses.
Some years ago in discussing horse colors, Dr. Kenneth White stated, "Gray in horses should not be classed as a color, it should be classed as a disease." In making this statement he was referring to the high incidence of melanoma in gray horses.
Since graying is only carried when it is expressed (a horse that is not gray does not carry the graying gene), it could readily be eliminated from the breed by breeders simply discontinuing the use of breeding animals that are gray.

 Roan VS Gray
Horses carrying one or two copies of the dominant form of the gray gene (G for gray, g for non-gray) may be born any color, but will eventually become white or fleabitten grays.
Gray foals are born any color (depending upon the genetics of the sire and dam), changing slowly to a rose gray or dapple gray, and then to a white coat or fleabitten gray coat.
Grays have gray hairs on their faces and heads very early on, and are usually lighter colored on their heads than bodies.

 Coat Color Genetics
Since gray is produced by a dominant gene, at least one parent of a gray horse must be gray.
In the most extensively roaned horses, a typical pattern seen is that in which the body is silver due to a high percentage of white hair, but the legs and head are dark due to the preponderance of non-white hair.
Horses whose color cannot be defined may rarely be encountered, but a systematic appraisal of the genes likely to be found will provide a better identification than descriptive adjectives lacking a defined basis.

Grooming: Keep Your Gray Horse Gleaming
Occasional preshow baths aren't enough to prevent a gray horse from yellowing-and if he does yellow, clipping is the only way to remove the stain.
If you have bathed your horse recently and he's still clean, put warm water on the stain, apply about a teaspoonful of baby shampoo (more if the stain is large), scrub the area with your scrub brush (back and forth on the body, up and down on legs), and rinse.
Cold-weather modification: In the very coldest weather, your horse may object strongly to your washing the base of his tail, in that case, concentrate on his legs and the bottom of the tail, where most stains tend to happen.
