The gray whale population experienced a sharp decline during the middle of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries as a result of European and U.S. whalers harvesting the species off the Baja California coastline (Henderson 1972; Maldonado 1981; Ramos P. 1992; Sayers 1984; Scammon 1968; Whipple 1979).
Gray whale conservation programs on the Pacific Coast and vaquita conservation programs in the Gulf illustrate that marine mammals cannot be separated from the human communities that affect them and their habitat on a daily basis.
For gray whale conservation policies to be effective, it is essential that: (1) the political will to uphold that framework is sustained; (2) there is a serious commitment to community-based conservation programs; and (3) there is an on-going and meaningful dialogue among all user-groups in gray whale habitats.

Santa Cruz CNPS Local Plant Communities
Somehow, despite the recent listing of California native grasslands as the eighth rarest ecosystem in the United States, the rarity of the prairie ecosystem has not been recognized and thereby continues to be lost through development or neglected by land managers.
This grass has become established on the borders of Gray Whale Ranch and throughout meadows of the UCSC campus.
To allow live oak woodland to invade meadowlands (as is currently the policy at Wilder Ranch) is to allow the replacement of a rare habitat by a more locally common one and, thereby, the loss of structural, functional, and species level biodiversity.

Hayes, who drives a red Toyota pickup festooned with bumper stickers saying "Keep Wilder Ranch Wild," is currently working on his doctorate on grassland restoration, and thinks some amount of trail use is good.

But while Hayes has accused the DPR of mismanaging Gray Whale Ranch in the past, they seem to be taking some of his advice and are even looking into getting permits to burn.
