 Gray-cheeked Mangabey (Cercocebus albigena)
The gray-cheeked mangabey is primarily feeds on fruits and seeds, but also eats leaves, foliage, flowers, animal prey (arthropods), and gum.
The gray-cheeked mangabey is found in the countries of Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Equatorial Guinea, Gabon, Uganda, and Zaire.

 Untitled Document
The red-capped and crested mangabey spend a lot of time foraging on the ground, but the black, grey-cheeked and sooty stay mainly in the trees, preferring the middle to upper canopy.
Mangabeys have longer muzzles than other long-tailed monkeys and they strut or lumber along big branches or sit on their haunches just like baboons.
Mangabeys are very vocal and their calls are often the first and only indication of their presence.

 Mindy's Memory - Mangabey Facts
Gray-cheeked mangabeys are listed as Lower Risk by CITES II, while black mangabeys are classified as Data Deficient (IUCN.) Humans and mangabeys can compete for the same wild food sources, and they are also hunted by humans for meat and killed as crop-raiding pests.
Mangabeys are normally a vocal group and have a variety of gestures and calls, including a loud call that can carry for quite a long way, and is used for spacing.
Mangabeys have long tails - often longer than the rest of their body, which are carried parallel over their backs.

Science Blog -- Study suggests that logging may affect monkey health
A gray-cheeked mangabey peers out at Purdue researcher William Olupot after being tagged with a radio device designed to track its location in the 776-square-mile Kibale National Park of Uganda.
While studying the movements of gray-cheeked mangabeys in the Kibale National Park of Uganda, Purdue University doctoral student William Olupot found some unexpected differences in weight between animals living in primary forest -- areas that have never been logged -- and those living nearby in a forest that was logged in the 1960s and '70s.
Though further study would be required to see what, if any, direct effect the lower body weights have on mangabeys, Olupot says his study did find evidence that living in areas that have been logged may affect the social behavior of the monkeys.

 PRIMATES
Several studies have been conducted on the grey-cheeked mangabey, and information on some aspects of its ecology is very good.
Formerly included in genus Cercocebus, this mangabey was put in a distinct genus by Groves (1978).
Status and distribution of this mangabey was recently investigated in Gabon (Blom et al., 1992) and south-east Cameroon (Mitani, 1990, Usongo and Fimbel, 1995).

 ADW: Lophocebus albigena: Information
The black mangabey is covered entirely in soft shaggy black hair except for the white to gray coloration of the broadly projecting whisker and cheek hairs (Horn 1987).
Mangabeys occupy fairly small home ranges totaling about 0.13-0.26 sq km.
The black mangabey can be found throughout an area in Africa ranging westward to the Congo River and east to the shores of the Lualaba River in Zaire.

In contrast, older females of the gray-cheeked mangabey are fully integrated into the group but tend to be less active in grooming, embracing, and other individual social acknowledgments.
Researchers discovered that the presence of the grandmother of female vervets (small gray African monkey) in a captive socially living colony had a profound impact on the mortality rate of newborns.
Specifically, (1) the presence of the infant's grandmother determined the level of risk; and (2) infant mortality for female vervets with grandmothers present was only 32 percent, whereas infant mortality for vervets without their grandmothers present was over double at 73 percent (Fairbanks and McGuire, 1986).

 Apes & Monkeys
Mangabeys fill up their large cheek pouches with fruits, leaves, and insects as they forage during the day.
Cheek pouches that open near the lower teeth make it possible for baboons to eat on the run.
Cheek pouches enable guenons to feed rapidly and then retire to safety to chew and swallow their food at leisure.

Relating Chimpanzee Diets to Potential Australopithecus Diets
Mangabeys did not track any single food category significantly (Conklin-Brittain et al., submitted).
The "C" stands for chimpanzee, B14, M14, and R14 were blue, mangabey, and redtail monkey troops respectively in the K14 compartment of Kibale Forest, while B30, M30, and R30 were blue, mangabey, and redtail monkey troops respectively in the K30 compartment.
However, when fruit was abundant, the blues and redtails tracked the chimpanzee ripe fruits where as the mangabeys did not (figure 5).

 Lobeke
Spot-nosed monkey Cercopithecus nictitans and gray-cheeked mangabey Lophocebus albigena were the most abundant with group encounter rates of 0.3/km and 0.28/km respectively.
Results of 6 arboreal species studied in the Lobeke Forest showed an overall encounter rate of 0.98/km.

 A Behavioral Analysis of Cercopithecidae
Infant mounting behavior in rhesus monkeys is directed toward peers whereas sooty mangabey, Cercocebus torquatus atys, infant mounting behavior is directed towards sexually mature females.
In another species comparison, female sooty mangabeys vocalize during copulation which is the same type of vocalization used during copulation in the chacma baboon, Papio ursinus (Gust and Gordon 1991).

 Peeters2002.html
Mangabeys ( Cercocebus sp) are related to mandrills, and most probably derive from a common ancestor (43, 57).
The natural habitat of sooty mangabeys coincides with the geographical region where HIV-2 is prevalent in West Africa and sooty mangabeys are regularly hunted for food or kept as pets, allowing thus direct contact between mangabeys and humans (63).
The geographic distribution of red-capped mangabeys does overlap that of mandrills and drills allowing thus possible cross-species transmissions between them, whereas sooty mangabeys are restricted since a long period to West Africa only (Figure 3b).

 Waser's talk
In the agile mangabey, a comparison with the gray-cheeked mangabey produced a puzzling result: males of different groups responded aggressively to playbacks of their neighbors' calls, but groups nevertheless sometimes formed peaceful "supergroups".
example: gray-cheeked mangabeys, groups show large exclusive core areas, but playback experiments show no evidence that aggression is site-specific, rather they suggest that mangabey groups simply avoid close proximity; could exclusive areas be a byproduct of this behavior plus site attachment?
It seems as if they would benefit from some form of shared patrolling of boundaries, but no evidence that they do.

 Gorilla observation with western leaders
We then enter the park in search of chimpanzees, red colobus, black-and-white colobus, red tails, gray-cheeked mangabey and other primate species.
We drive to Kibale Forest and at the forest entrance, we will meet our local guides.
We will also enjoy a “swamp walk” offering excellent primate viewing at close range.

 Megatransect III @ nationalgeographic.com
Earlier he had mentioned that this mangabey species, with its unmistakable carroty crew cut, was native only to forests near the Atlantic coast; back farther inland, while crossing Congo and eastern Gabon, he had seen plenty of gray-cheeked mangabeys but none of the red-capped.
Having heard it many times over the months, even I could recognize that as the alarm call of the gray-cheeked mangabey, Lophocebus albigena, another species dependent on fruiting trees.
) from the monkeys, allowing him to identify them: Cercocebus torquatus torquatus, the red-capped mangabey, locally known as the kako.

 mod 2 lesson history
A small plant-eating monkey, the gray cheeked mangabey, spends only three our of every 24 hours eating.
Perez began exploring the theory after noting that the amount of time spent eating by African herbivores increases proportionately with their body weights.
But heavier plant-eaters like impala and buffalo spend progressively more time gathering food.
