USS Grayback (SS/SSG/APSS/LPSS-574), the lead ship of her class of submarine, was the second ship of the United States Navy to be named for the grayback, a small herring of great commercial importance in the Great Lakes.
Grayback was initially designated as an attack submarine, but was converted to a Regulus II guided missile submarine (SSG-574) in 1958.
Grayback was decommissioned for the second time on 15 January 1984 at Subic Bay Naval Station in the Republic of the Philippines.

Grayback decommissioned 16 June 1984 and was sunk as a target near Subic Bay, Republic of the Philippines on 13 April 1986.

Harder, Darter, Gudgeon, Grayback and Growler got the Fairbanks Morse aluminum block, high speed engines which also took less space and had a higher rated horsepower to weight ratio then the General Motors engines.
In the case of Grayback and Growler these engines were also shock and sound isolated, previously done only in the three "K" class hunter- killer submarines of the early 1950's.

 REGULUS II CRUISE MISSILE
The 11-ton Regulus II cruise missile, which was powered by a General Electric J79 jet engine, had a wingspan of 20 feet and 1 inch (6.12 meters), a length of 57 feet and 6 inches (17.5 meters), a range of 1,380 miles (2,220 km), and 54 of them were built.
The only submarine-based firing of the Regulus II cruise missile, from the USS Grayback, occurred in September 1958 and some of these were still in use by the USN after 1958, as reuseable supersonic target drones, equiped with landing gear.
These photos show some of the Regulus II cruise missiles being used as target drones for Bomarc missiles, at the Eglin Gulf Test Range, which was adjacent to the Venice Municipal Airport, in Venice, Florida.
