Grayling transited the Panama Canal 3 December and moored at San Diego 10 December.
Grayling sailed for Pearl Harbor 17 December, arrived 24 December, and had the honor of being chosen for the Pacific Fleet change of command ceremony 31 December" 1941.
Grayling left Australian waters 18 March on her sixth war patrol and cruised in the Tarakan area and the Verde Island Passage.

She was not heard from after 19 August 1943, and on 30 September 1943, GRAYLING was reported as presumed lost.
GRAYLING's first patrol, made in January and February 1942, was a reconnaissance of the northern Gilbert Islands.
GRAYLING patrolled the lesser islands south of the Philippines on her sixth patrol, and sank two freighters, a small freighter-transport and two schooners.

On 27 August 1943 a torpedo attack was seen by the enemy, and the next day a surfaced submarine was seen northeast.
It is said that the freighter-transport HOKUAN MARU was engaged in a submarine action on the 9th in the Philippine area, but no additional date were available, and no known enemy attacks could have sunk GRAYLING.
Thus GRAYLING’s total record is 16 ships sunk, totaling 61,400 tons, and six ships damaged, for a total of 36,000 tons.

USS Grayling (SS-18) was renamed D-2 on 17 November 1911.
The second Grayling (SP-1259) was built by Boyden of Amesburg, Mass., in 1915 and acquired by the Navy from her owner, E. Gray, 7 May 1917.
The third Grayling (SP-289) was built by Peterson, Hudson River, N.Y.; acquired by the Navy from her owner, Myer Resebush, 22 May 1917; and commissioned the same day, Boatswain Robert L. Kemp, USNRF, in command.

 Rocky Mountain Submarine Veterans
The USS Grayling Memorial is located at Sloan's Lake Park on the corner of Sheridan and 17th.
She damaged a Japanese submarine tender 13 August, but was forced to return to Pearl Harbor 26 August by fuel leaks.At Pearl Harbor, GRAYLING repaired and was fitted with surface radar, after which she began her fourth patrol 19 October.
The submarine was scheduled to make a radio report on the 12th, which she did not, and all attempts to contact her failed.

 USS Grayling (SS-209) at AllExperts
USS Grayling (SS-209), a Tambor-class submarine, was the fourth ship of the United States Navy to be named for the grayling, a fresh-water game fish closely related to the trout.
Grayling transited the Panama Canal on 3 December and moored at San Diego, California, on 10 December.
Grayling returned to action in June as all available ships were pressed into service to oppose the Japanese advance on Midway Island.
