The southern and eastern portions of the county lie in the post oak savannah region of the state, and the northern and western portions lie in the flland prairie.
By the time of the Texas Revolution, the only settlements in present-day Milam County were the very thinly populated community of Nashville-on-the-Brazos at the eastern edge of the county and a few families scattered along the upper Brazos and the Little River.

After the Texas left, the Guards, believing that she had other reasons besides that of low water, for refusing to take them, held an indignation meeting, and passed resolutions condemning the boat, and requesting their friends behind to withhold their patronage from her in future.
The Guards appointed a committee to wait on the Captain of the Texas, for an explanation, which he gave to their satisfaction—the boat is therefore exonerated from all blame.

In 1975, biologists attempted to re-establish a whooping crane population in Idaho’s Grays Lake National Wildlife Refuge by using sandhill cranes as surrogate parents for whooping crane eggs.
Although many of the young cranes migrated with their adoptive parents and wintered in New Mexico, the project was soon terminated because none of the cranes were able to successfully breed and the population suffered high mortality rates.
