Grayson Space Navy - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Grayson Space Navy are the space forces for the planet Grayson, a space nation in the Honor Harrington universe created by the science fiction author David Weber.
In the internal history of the Honorverse, Grayson was settled by emigrants from Earth motivated by their religion, which called for a withdrawal from the technocratic society of Earth, a society the future inhabitants of Grayson believed to be subversive of true human potential and spirituality.
The Grayson Navy consists of its main navy, with its regular chain of command, and the Protector's Own Squadron, which answers directly to the Protector, ruler of Grayson, currently commanded by Admiral Steadholder Honor Harrington, the Protector's Champion, with Admiral Alfredo Yu as her second-in-command.

Honorverse   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
The Honorverse is the semi-official name for the setting of a military science fiction series of stories by David Weber featuring Honor Harrington, the Nelsonesque heroine in a series reminiscent of Forester's Horatio Hornblower book series.
Disruptive technological advances have been gradual in the Honorverse for most of the 500 years of the Star Kingdom of Manticore's existence, and as the series opens, that technological stagnation has led to a similar stagnation in both strategy and military tactics.
The gravity impeller propulsion systems used in spaceships require "gun ports" in military vessels and captains strive to position their ships to maximize their fire power by using a broadside attack akin to the unturreted days dominated by the warships and ships of the line of the Age of Sail.

Under the Grayson Constitution, a steading becomes a permanent, standing territorial unit from the moment that it is first established.
Because of the peculiarities of the fashion in which society on Grayson evolved in the face of religious beliefs and survival imperatives, each of these permanent political units is an autocratic state with its own ruler.
Going at it that way, and assuming that she secured the approval of the heads of state and legislatures involved, she could separate the titles while still keeping them in her own line, but it wouldn't be by simply "willing" one title to one child, and the other title to another.

In this new series, Weber proves that the Honorverse is greater than Honor Harrington, and that he can write a novel that is fully as compelling as his earlier work without relying on Honor at all.
Weber’s writing skills are on display, his characters are heroic without being superhuman, the action is at the individual ship or squadron level where the excitement is highest, and all the baggage of Honor is missing.
Recently, however, he has written a standalone Honorverse novel with Eric Flint, and several characters and plot elements from that work were major factors in The Shadow of Saganami.

With the most recent group of short stories and novels in the "Honorverse" Weber and his collaborators seem to be establishing three groups of characters and storylines, which they are all linked in a reasonably consistent manner into one history.
The first main difference between "Crown of Slaves" and most of the other books in the Honorverse is that the main enemy is the genetic slavers, the companies who traffic in slaves (particularly Manpower) and the governments they have bought.
Agents from Manticore and Grayson are practically allied with agents from Haven against the slavers, despite the fact that their countries are involved in a very bitter war.

I can imagine Grayson and Manticore staying the same, as their governments have remained in line, but when their governments went through violent change, there were major changes made in and about the Military as well.

 Erewhon and the Inertial Compensator
The truth is that the Erewhonese Navy was never anywhere near as interested as Grayson in ensuring that it had "top-of-the-line" technical capabilities in every respect.
For that reason, the Erewhonese themselves preferred to rely on Manticoran and Grayson shipyards and backup (in the form of a couple of divisions of superdreadnoughts) for their own Navy.
While they upgraded their SD's missile tubes and EW, they never even considered building pod designs, and because they did not operate regularly with offensive forces of the Alliance, they were less concerned about refitting with the new compensators.

Having recovered from the serious injures she sustained in the battle to protect Grayson, Captain Honor Harrington is assigned to her new command - the battlecruiser Nike, fresh out of Manticore's shipyards and ready to take its place at the head of the fleet.
Whereas the first two books in the Honor Harrington series are more or less self-contained, with the universe's backstory and a few tendrils connecting them, The Short Victorious War is clearly setting us up for big stuff down the road, while also giving the reader more than enough action to stay awake for.
But this book shakes things up where storytelling in the Honorverse is concerned in other ways.

David Weber has expanded his Honorverse and introduced a new band of characters by creating a great spin-off series which begins with The Shadow of Saganami.
Just when I was afraid that the Honorverse was in danger of running out of steam Weber launches this brilliant new off-shoot.
I was willing to give Flint a try but the book was also long, dull, with little action and much endless dialogue and exposition about the increasingly complex diplomatic and political situation and populated with characters I found unbelievable, silly and for whose fate I gave not a damn.
