In the internal history of the Honorverse (additional info and facts about Honorverse), Grayson was settled by emigrants from Earth motivated by their religion, which called for a withdrawal from the technocratic society of Earth, a society the future inhabitants of Grayson believed to be subversive of true human potential and spirituality.
Until Grayson joined the Manticoran (additional info and facts about Manticoran) Alliance, the Grayson Navy was hopelessly obsolete, and most of it was destroyed during a brief war with its neighbor Masada, just before it officially joined the Manticoran Alliance (Two Manticoran destroyers were also lost during the incident, with two cruisers badly damaged.)
The Grayson Navy consists of its main navy, with its regular chain of command, and the Protector's Own Squadron, which answers directly to the Protector, ruler of Grayson, currently commanded by Admiral Steadholder Honor Harrington (additional info and facts about Honor Harrington), the Protector's Champion, with Admiral Alfredo Yu as her second-in-command.

 USN Ships--USS Grayson (DD-435)
Grayson received an overhaul during the next few months but reentered the combat zone in time to escort the aircraft carrier Enterprise during the invasion of Guadalcanal and Tulagi in early August 1942 and in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons later in that month.
The destroyer was in the south Pacific well into 1943, supporting the long and bloody campaign to hold Guadalcanal and, on 18 October 1942 rescued survivors of her sunken sister ship, USS Meredith, and recovered the abandoned tug Vireo.
USS Grayson was stricken from the Naval Vessel Register in February 1971 and was sold for scrapping in November 1972.

A variety of posts led Grayson to Washington, where on 12 December 1912 he was assigned to the Bureau of Medicine and Surgery with additional duty as Aide to the White House.
Grayson again found herself with a fast carrier force as she sailed from Pearl Harbor 15 July to escort Enterprise and Hornet.
Grayson remained at Charleston until decommissioned, 4 February 1947, and was placed in reserve.

Relying on Grayson to do nothing, especially when a large part of its fleet had disappeared, is the kind of mistake that Theisman should never have fallen into.
