The Great Allegheny Passage is a foot trail currently under construction that will run for 150 miles from Cumberland, Maryland to Point State Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with a 52-mile branch to the Pittsburgh International Airport.
When complete, this trail will link up with the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal towpath trail, which runs for 185 miles between Cumberland and Washington, DC.
The Allegheny Trail Alliance is a group of seven trail organizations who have joined together to bring this trail to completion.

In 1999, I rode the Youghiogheny River Trail, Allegheny Highlands Trail and CandO Canal Towpath from near McKeesport, PA to Washington, DC.
I think that one of the failings of the Yough and Allegheny Highlands Trails are the lack of facilities, even as simple as a place to get water.
This time it had cooled off enough that it wasn't too hot to be in the sleeping bag and the mosquitoes were either not bothering me or flapped their wings more quietly so that I could actually get some sleep.

Progress on the Allegheny Highlands Trail of Maryland took a giant and long-awaited leap forward this fall with the purchase of 4.8 miles of right of way from near Frostburg to the Mason Dixon Line.
The recently published Somerset County map highlights the Great Allegheny Passage, thanks to Hank Parke and Somerset County Rails-to-Trails Association.
Bob Downing, who was on the June tour, wrote a great article on the Passage that was picked up by newspapers as far away as Oklahoma.

The middle day was an attempt to ride to Myersdale, but the distance proved too great for a one day trip so it was shortened a bit.
The weather was chilly and drizzly for two days, but the third day after starting in sub-freezing weather under a brilliant sky warmed up considerably.

This particular sign is marking Route S which cuts across the southern part of the state.
