Great Barr Hall was once home of Samuel Galton and a meeting place of the Lunar Society.
Musician Steve Winwood was born and raised in the Birmingham part of Great Barr.

Great Barr Hall, a Grade 2* Listed building, is a sadly neglected stately home in Great Barr, Walsall, very near Birmingham, historically in the county of Staffordshire, England.
Formerly the home of the Scott Family (who gave their name to the nearby Scott Arms pub and shopping centre), during the 1780s the Hall was leased by Samuel Galton and was the venue for meetings of the Lunar Society.
Two of the extant lodge houses are believed to be by Sir George Gilbert Scott (no relation to the hall's owners).

The Great Barrier Reef is not a single reef, but thousands of individual reefs, shoals, atolls, coral cogs, and larger islands.
A report commissioned by Greenpeace in 1999 says that much of the Great Barrier Reef will die within about 40 years unless action is taken to stop global warming, as corals in southern and central parts of the Great Barrier Reef are likely to be severely affected by increases in sea temperatures.

The South elevation of the Hall was extended, the entrance was moved to the North elevation, a building to the rear was demolished and the North and West elevations were extended.
From 1918 Great Barr Hall was used as a hospital for the mentally ill.
The Hall was subject to further insensitive modification in the late 1960's when the magnificent oriel windows on the North elevation were replaced with metal casements.

Woodward Hall, built in 1899, originally housed the St. John's College Library, the science laboratories, and an armory in the basement.
The science labs were moved to Mellon Hall when it was completed in 1959, and the armory was discontinued when the college ceased offering a military prep program in the 1920s.
A two-year renovation and expansion to Woodward Hall was completed in 1969, but by 1995 the library's collection had increased to 90,000 volumes and more space was needed.

Part of the English Heritage Trust, Kirby Hall is mostly a ruin of a grand Elizabethan mansion, with a few restored parts.
The Great Hall is decorated here as it would have appeared in the time of "Turnspit" (1599).
As a writer, it was far easier to look at a mansion from the correct time period that was mostly empty and use it as my fictional setting than to take a mansion that was still being lived in, one that had changed "styles" a dozen times over the centuries.

My brother and I (unofficially) went to see Great Barr Hall one cold, breezy, rainy January morning of this year 2004.
The fence which runs right in front and all around the hall had been pulled down (by local vandals) on the east side - which allowed us access to the inside of the hall.
Samuel rented the hall from Joseph and lived there from 1786 to 1797 and was a member of the famed Lunar Society.
