The Great Basin ecosystem is, as its name implies, a huge biogeographic ecoregion in the heart of the western United States, bordered on the west by the Sierra Nevada, on the east by the Wasatch front of the Rocky Mountains, on the north by the Snake River and on the south by the Mojave Desert.
The Great Basin is approximately 900 miles long from north to south at its longest point and 570 miles wide from east to west, exceeding the land area of the entire northeast region of the United States.
The population of the Great Basin is largely concentrated in urban areas, with the rural areas among the most sparsely populated in the United States.

Remington testified Great Basin College had developed an elementary education program and it was believed the program should be contiguous with opportunities for professional development of existing teachers.  The high tech facility proposed by A.B. would provide that type of professional development.
Costa Campbell said the facility would be a joint-use facility with the Humboldt County School District and Great Basin College.  She noted the two schools were located across from each other in Winnemucca.  The two schools had a good working relationship and the proximity was conducive to the addition of another facility.
Rosasco noted community colleges provided the resource that businesses and industry could approach to access short- or long-term training needed in a particular field.  She stated displaced workers often needed retraining that community colleges could provide.  She added appropriate training centers were always an incentive for new industry to locate in a new area.

 Governor’s support expected for Great Basin College building (printable version)
ELKO — Gov. Kenny Guinn is expected to request state funding for Great Basin College’s proposed electrical technology building in his state budget presentation Jan. 24.
The college sought money for the project in two previous sessions of the Nevada Legislature, which meets every two years, but both times the project failed to win funding.
The college is proposing spending $12.6 million for the electrical technology building, with the college coming up with the remaining $500,000 for construction.

He has offered to be a lobbyist for the entire seven-school University and Community College System of Nevada, which is the statewide higher education organization of which UNR is a member.
In a financing study completed in December, UNLV had dropped to third in the battle for state money behind Great Basin College in Elko.
The study showed that Great Basin College received about $140 more in per-student state financing than UNLV during this past school year.
