In deference to its ancient status Great Bedwyn borough (a slightly larger area than the Saxon town boundaries identified above, and still recited in a document of 1748) was excluded from forest jurisdiction when the woodlands of Savernake were constituted a forest, probably in the early twelfth century.
In Great Bedwyn itself, and in various outlying parts of the parish, are to be seen many examples of Ailesbury estate cottages, of russet brick under clay tiles or slates, and with diamond-paned windows.
Much of Great Bedwyn’s present appearance is owing to developments during and since the eighteenth century, and few buildings (except in what was probably a seventeenth century squatter development between the bridge and Jockey Green) survive from earlier periods.

My first choice was too wet and my second was too misty (atmospheric mist all very well, but I couldn't actually see anything!) so I made for the Kennet and Avon canal at Great Bedwyn to walk along the towpath to Crofton.
A peaceful-looking stretch of the Kennet and Avon canal between Great Bedwyn and Crofton.
Great Bedwyn marks the end of local services from Reading, which means that anyone wanting to go west from Bedwyn has first to go east all the way to Newbury before heading back on the same tracks.

In 1824 the Pennsylvania Society sent the engineer William Strickland to Great Britain to study railway construction, and it was subsequently that the astonishing Allegheny Portage Tramroad was built as part of a composite railway and canal link, with no less than ten powered inclined planes.
Across low-lying land, particularly outside towns, an aqueduct had to be raised high enough to give a sufficient "head" to the supply, and the use of arches both removed a potential barrier to communication and lessened the amount of stone required for construction.
Some of these were of great length, and the immense weight of the water carried ensured that these were not simple wooden troughs but had strong lateral reinforcement.

The first entries in Great and Little Bedwyn, Wiltshire emerge in the 18th century and are for the marriage of Elizabeth BRADMORE and Edward BARTHOLOMEW in November 1727 in Great Bedwyn.
Between 1727 and 1809 there are records of the family being in Great and Little Bedwyn, but it is at this stage that the BREADMORE people seem to split away into five different groups.
Many of the BREADMORE people in England are descendants of one of these five groups and if I could prove the five groups are connected in Great/Little Bedwyn I would be able to show that a large proportion of the BREADMOREs in the world are related.
