At the start of the 1950s the 400 residents were so keen to bridge the 150m gap between Bernera and Lewis they threatened to build their own causeway by dynamiting the cliffs on either side.
Bernera and the surrounding islands are owned by Count Robin de la Lanne Mirelees, also known as Prince of Coronata who is a resident of Great Bernera.
En route to Bostadh you pass the distinctive cairn erected by the people of Bernera in 1992 to commemorate the participants in the Bernera riot of 1874.

Living on Great Bernera I have got very used to the abundance of wildlife to be seen on this island.
Despite the general lack of trees on Lewis the Grey Heron is a very common sight here on Great Bernera and as I walk or drive between Valasay and Hacklete I am often greeted by the sight and sound of the Heron flying off having been disturbed from its fishing post.
Summer has surely arrived here on Bernera with the song of the Skylark filling the air over the moorland and the resident Blackbirds and Thrushes already raising their first broods on a number of local crofts.

 Great Bernera Bridge
The construction of the fixed link to Great Bernera from Lewis was a major breakthrough for civil engineering in the UK - it was the first example of a bridge made of pre-stressed concrete girders in the country.
The cost of the project was met from national and local government - with 60 per cent coming from the transport ministry, 25 per cent from the agriculture ministry and the rest from the council.
Before the bridge was built there had been a local campaign for a causeway to replace the boat which used to cross the strait with cattle swimming behind it.

This lobster pond was built in the 1860s and is two miles north of the village of Circebost in Great Bernera, on the east side of Loch Birsay (O.S.173373).
Out of their element, and exposed to air and light, lobsters are short-lived: but during the colder weather when carefully packed in boxes, they are fairly tenacious of life, and reach Billingsgate from Lewis usually in good marketable condition.

Great Bernera, together with neighbouring Uig, was one of the eight pilot areas set up in 1997 by the government under the Initiative at the Edge project to help remote and fragile communities.
Mr Maclean said no price has been spoken about, but if there was a takeover, the community might wish to develop a hostel, a hotel and forestry, and to extend crofting as well as upgrade a local crab processing plant.

After a short trip down the Loch we came to Great Bernera Island, on the northern shores of which is Bostadh Beach onto which we landed using, as usual, the Zodiacs.
In an echo of the discovery of Skara Brae a century and a half earlier, a storm in 1993 cut away the dunes on the east side of Bostadh Beach at the north end of the island of Great Bernera.
Following the storm a series of stone structures were found to be projecting through the new dune surface.

We head west, along the B8011, over the Grimersta River and then north along the B8059 to Great Bernera.
Once over the 1950s bridge to Great Bernera (which replaced a dodgy ferry cum rowing-boat), we quickly reach the main village, Breacleit.
The weather appears to breaking down from the east as we head south across Bernera.
