English Bible History: Timeline of how we got the English Bible
Cranmer's Bible, published by Coverdale, was known as the Great Bible due to its great size: a large pulpit folio measuring over 14 inches tall.
There, with the protection of the great theologian John Calvin (author of the most famous theological book ever published, Calvin’s Institutes of the Christian Religion)and John Knox, the great Reformer of the Scottish Church, the Church of Geneva determined to produce a Bible that would educate their families while they continued in exile.
In 1568, a revision of the Great Bible known as the Bishop's Bible was introduced.

The first edition of this "Great" Bible (called thus because of its standard, large folio, size) was published in 1539; the King's decree which enjoined that no other translation be used or published henceforth except as licensed by Archbishop Cranmer (for a period of five years) was issued in November 1539.
Textually, the "Great" Bible is a direct successor to Matthew's Bible, though much of the exact wording was revised by Coverdale with the use of Erasmus' Latin and Greek New Testaments and Muenster's new edition of the Latin Old Testament.
For all this, the "Great" Bible was still the version that, however reluctantly, the King and his Bishops had set out for the instruction of the common people, and it was heavily used by shepherds, merchants and laborers alike (provided they had the gift of literacy).

And they that occupy them be in much safeguard, and have a great consolation and be the readier unto all goodness, the slower unto all evil; and if they have done anything amiss, anon even by the sight of the books their consciences be admonished, and they wax sorry and ashamed of the fact.
Yet was there that took occasion by the great beauty and virtue of them, to dishonor God, and to defile themselves with idolatry, giving the honor of the living God and creator of all things, to such things as he had created.

 Redefining the Sacred--The Great Bible
The woodcut title page of the Great Bible, depicted here, tells the story of the wide dissemination of an English Bible as the keystone of a strongly united church and state.
The preacher in the pulpit expounds the Scripture to commoners, who receive it with shouts of "Vivat Rex" and "God save the king." Henry as head of the church liberates his people from the yoke of the papacy and in so doing unites the clergy and laity under one imperial monarchy.
Even if we acknowledge the prison in the lower right corner as the darker side of this persuasion, the story of the Great Bible's production and reception is still more complicated than the woodcut.
