Picture a scene in 1995 (when Great Big Sea were first breaking onto the scene).
Some Newfoundlad band named Great Big Sea were opening for the talented Bentall, and the only people that bothered to show up were students from Cornerbrook, Conception Bay and St.John's who were amazed that their any band from their home province would get a gig off "the rock".
This time the main act were Blue Rodeo, another great Canadian band, but the scene couldn't be different from Great Big Sea's first trip to the school, only months earlier.

Great Big Sea (often shortened to GBS) is a Canadian folk-rock band from Newfoundland and Labrador, best known for performing energetic rock interpretations of traditional Newfoundland folk songs including sea chanties, which draw from the island's 500-year-old Irish, English, and French heritage.
The band has also produced a DVD, Great Big DVD, which was released in 2003 in Canada and the United States.
Also in late 2005, Great Big Sea released its first podcast, with clips of the band bantering back and forth in the studio mixed with various songs by them and other artists.

Naomi de Bruyn wrote a fine career retrospective on Great Big Sea with lots of great details on their music and career up to the release of their 4th album, Turn.
Great Big Sea are Alan Doyle (vocals, guitar, bouzouki), Bob Hallett (vocals, fiddles, tenor banjo, accordion, bouzouki, mandolin, high and low whistles), Séan McCann (vocals, guitar, bodhran, shakers) and Darrell Power (vocals, bass, bones, mandola).
As for their original material, "Sea of No Cares" straddles narrative and the world of feelings as it describes a man falling in love and leaving his friends "getting cynically stoned" at the bar.

I was introduced to Newfoundland's Great Big Sea about a year ago by a friend who specializes in promoting Canadian bands.
The Great Big Sea have two albums that both went platinum in Canada, and are currently promoting a USA-only collection of their Canadian hits called Rant and Roar.
Great Big Sea are special in that they, as not so much a rock and roll band as a "traditional" band, have firmly set themselves a place in the world music scene.

It is probably as a result of the foregoing that I haven't been much of a sea shanty type of guy.
It is to Great Big Sea's credit that the CD does not sound choppy as a result.
Yet this song, penned by Great Big Sea's Alan Doyle, has a timelessness about it that would render it contemporary in 1800 or 2000 or any and all points in between.

When Canadian Celtic/roots band Great Big Sea performs at the Sphere Entertainment Complex on Main Street in downtown Buffalo Friday April 2, it will bring in some new sounds and approaches without trying to sound different.
Among the better songs on the new CD is “Helmethead,” a fun, hard-driving tune about a National Hockey League enforcer knowing his time is limited and what he has to do to keep his roster slot.
It’s also great that we’re all writing; the only thing better than a good song is two good songs.

Great Big Sea is bringing a great deal of international attention to Newfoundland's traditional music, which is equal parts Scots-Irish heritage, maritime influence and general jar-in-the-kitchen foolery.
Doyle is also a bit astonished at how rapidly Great Big Sea has caught on in the United States.
Earlier albums (Great Big Sea, Up and Play) didn't get much attention south of the Canadian border -- although it did send them touring in Europe, where they shared a few stages with the Oysterband.

I can't give kudos enough to Great Big Sea, which is probably the best blend of contemporary and traditional music out there.
And of course, there is Great Big Sea--about the most popular band in Newfoundland, topping the charts in Canada and making a respectable name for itself south of the border as well.
About the best I can do is to compare Great Big Sea to other artists--another difficulty, since they aren't easily comparable.

While The Rankin Family may have spurred the interest in Celtic music in Canada, Great Big Sea were the ones to really take the style and run with it, bringing it to a younger audience that previously regarded it as a style more suitable for fishermen and grandparents.
I got to know Great Big Sea while working in Geulph Ontario Canada and working with a girl from Newfoundland.
This is a great album, with much richness in words and music.

I think our shows have always been aggressive and intense and that really rubbed off on the crowd as well, and that's what is great about these crazy show we've done in the last couple of weeks.
