Great Bookham is a village in Surrey, between Leatherhead and Guildford.
To the west of the Bookhams lies the village of Effingham; further west on the road to Guildford the similar villages of East and West Horsley and Clandon are to be found.
Great Bookham Common was bought by local residents in 1923 to save the oak woodlands, then given to the National Trust.

By way of confirmation of this supposition that there is no distinction between the two parishes, as recently as 1824, lay documents relate to land transactions, in which land was described as being "in Great Bookham in the parish of Bookham".
The Domesday survey refers to the manor of Little Bookham being held by Halsard of William de Braose, Lord of Bramber, and the manor appears to have remained in the Halsard or Hansard family until about 1291.
It would seem, therefore, that Little Bookham Parish Church was built by the Hansard family about 1100 and probably at first was a manorial chapel.

Great Bookhams church of St Nicholas is a Norman on a Saxon site of worship, and has welcomed many distinguished people into its congregation, not least the future King.
Elizabeth Barrett was said to have resided at the Old Rectory; her father rented the property in 1846 in an attempt to get his daughter, who spent much of her time on her back after an injury during childhood, to forget Robert Browning.
Thomas Briggs, a butcher of Great Bookham, was hanged in January 1594 after being found guilty of breaking into a property at Newdigate and stealing two oxen valued at £8.

Jane BILBY is correct, age 44 born Bookham, Surrey, then we have Mary BILBY, this definitely shows as Abary on the 1871 Census, so again perhaps the enumerator did not like this name.
Otherwise correct aged 16 born Bookham, Surrey, (no James or Thomas on this Census), finally a new child, Fred (I wonder what that really is) age 6 born Banstead, Surrey.
Francis is 55 a General Labourer, born Effingham, Surrey, Jane BILBY is 54 born Great Bookham, Surrey.

Sadly he passed away and in going through some of his possessions my mother came across a letter from Andy Roberts dated June 1968 which talked about a visit to the farm with a BBC crew, and of a song he had performed for the first time in public in the Albert Hall that year.
So, you see, the great Percy Parslow is associated in my mind with a wonderful visit to the farm, followed by years of pleasure from a succession of small rodents, which were all looked after according to advice from his own handbook on hamster-keeping.
I returned to Great Bookham around 1987, and believe I found the farm from memory alone.
