Mo Mowlam, who presented the final programme on Churchill, and was thus an utter success, seemed no better than most of the rest to me. But she has been very popular these last ten years and that seems as odd to me as Diana Spencer’s popularity.
Rosie Boycott was her advocate and she shamelessly held that though Diana was known as “Thicky Spencer” at school she nevertheless was great, in her own special way.
Clearly, most of the hundred were over-rated and do not even belong in the first thousand or even the first million in many cases, and Diana is a case in point.

His shipbuilding efforts certainly had a transatlantic dimension, considering the SS Great Britain, the world7s first ocean-going propellor driven iron ship was designed for the transatlantic trade, but otherwise, I can understand why he wouldn7t be so well known in the States.
As for the WWII thing, Hitler was not iterested in invading Great Britain if he could have negotiated it out of the war as the likes of Lord Halifax would have done.
General Winter don't qualify as great military disasters; it's just that other factors, such as implications of outcome, extent of reversal, and sheer boneheadedness of planning or execution by the losing side, must be factored in.

Hot contenders for the top 10 in Finland are: C.G.E Mannerheim (a marshall, and the main figure in the Finnish struggle for independence around WWI, and also during WWII), Jean Sibelius (National Composer), Urho Kekkonen (Politician, was the president 1956 - 1981) and Mikael Agricola (the 'founder' of Finnish written language)
Great Czechs (Dvorak, Vaclav Havel) and Great Belgians (Rubens, Brueghel) are also going to happen shortly with 15 more countries talking to BBC Two about buying the format at the moment, including the U.S..

Great Britons: The Great Debate is a lavishly illustrated guide to the top-10 icons of British history, as voted for by many thousands of BBC viewers.
One or two criticisms: an unfortunate mini-competition for the most saccharine and hyperbolic prose seems to have broken out amongst some of the guest writers (Fiona Shaw, Lucy Moore, Mo Mowlam, Alan Davies, etc), and while this might have been OK on TV, it jars somewhat in print.
How many fl Britons were passed over I wonder, how many gay's, how many slightly risky Britons ignored in favour of a compact, sanitized history - one that would attract TV ratings, telephone revenue's, easy publication distribution...
