VISAR volunteers Peter Bailey, Edmond Wettengel and Bill Bailey of Great Camanoe were called to action at 2300 on December 27 to search for 3 persons aboard a 21' Mako owned by a rental operation located in St. Thomas.
Saltshaker returned to Great Camanoe at 0200 on Dec 28th.
It was determined by the Jim Scott VISAR coordinator that the vessel was 1/2 mile North of Great Thatch and was drifting.

The sailors were found unharmed on Great Tobago by VISAR crew at first light the following morning after an all-night search and were returned to HMS Lancaster (see letter of thanks).
The stalled Great Camanoe vessel was heading from Virgin Gorda to Great Camanoe.
Bailey arrived the outboard motor was running, but the propeller was not turning and the boat would probably have washed ashore on the windward side of Scrub Island within 30 minutes.

 The British Virgin Islands - National Parks on Other Islands in the BVI
Cam Bay, on the eastern shore of Great Camanoe, is comprised of an extensive shallow reef and lagoon system.
At the norhtwestern corner of the BVI chain lie the Tobago Cays, two islands surrounded by rugged cliffs, and whose seabeds slope dramatically to depths of 165 feet.
The cays are an excellent habitat for seabird nesting, as Great Tobago is the only nesting site in the BVI for the magnificent frigate birds.

The trip on land was beautiful with great views of the other Virgin islands, the reefs surrounding Virgin Gorda, and a number of secluded harbors we plant to visit later in our trip.
Which was great except for the wild chickens and the mangy cat that couldn’t stay away from us or our food.
We ended up motoring around Great Camanoe with great views of the island’s rocky shores and eventually made it to Lee Bay, a small bay on the western shore.

If you are going to Jost, Foxy's is okay (a little too touristy and the beach is not that great), I would suggest also going to white bay.
Great snorkeling at the caves as well as the Indians.
At Great Harbour in Jost Van Dyke (home of Foxy's), there are a couple of places to provision - Rudy's Superette and another very small "market" behind the ice cream stand, I believe.

To the east and southeast of Soper’s Hole and within a few hours sail are the rest of the BVIs including Norman, Peter, Salt, Cooper,Ginger Islands and last and perhaps the most beautiful, Virgin Gorda with its scenic North Sound and famous smooth rock formations “The Baths”.
Popular anchorages that are on the “must visit” list include The Bight at Norman Island where you can experience the Willie T, a raucous floating bar and restaurant and Pirates (formerly Billy Bones) bar and bistro on shore.
A couple of miles west of Foxy’s on White Beach is the infamous Soggy Dollar beach bar and restaurant where the BYC burgee is prominently hung.

Fringing the south side of Great Camanoe Island, it slopes steeply from about five feet near shore down to the level sandy bottom at 35 feet.
This is a great reef to cruise slowly, looking under the deeply cutback ledges and watching the parrotfish, angelfish and moray eels.
For me, the highlights of the week were night diving the living orange hold of the Rhone, sailing a silent and powerful seven knots toward Great Camanoe Island after diving the Chikuzen and swimming through the colorful mini-canyons at Painted Walls.

After the initial beat up the Sir Francis Drake Channel, it was all down hill once the fleet rounded Great Camanoe and ideal conditions for the light Melges 24.

We anchored in the beautiful and secluded Lee Bay on Great Camanoe, where dozens of pelicans dive-bomb schools of small fish for their breakfast early in the morning.
We went back to Great Harbor for the night as the swell was too dangerous at White Bay.
We picked up a few provisions and motored for Christmas Cove, Great St. James (an island which is, by the way, for sale!) Val Mueller made us a great macrobiotic meal (they are on this interesting diet)and Rogers entertained us with his guitar.

The pass between Great Camanoe and Little Camanoe is a shortcut for medium draft vessels to get from the Trellis Bay area to the north side of Tortola.
As we continued on toward Great Camanoe, we noticed areas of turbidity caused by the larger-than-normal swells breaking on the shorelines.
If the seas or swells persist, the areas of turbidity gradually fill in most of the bays and coves, severely degrading the clarity of the water that is so crucial to diving and snorkeling.

The Conservation and Fisheries Department (CFD), which led the charge to halt the dredging that would have supplied sand to be used as fill for the airport expansion, was also instructed to identify a more suitable location in conjunction with the Airport Development Project Team.
About 260,000 cubic yards, or 13,000 truckloads, of sand was to be dredged starting May from a site between Guana and Great Camanoe Islands at a spot about 1000 feet west of Lee Bay on Great Camanoe and under 50 feet of water.
CFD officials said the dredging would possibly destroy habitats of numerous commercial fish found in the area forever as well as cause surrounding beaches, notably Long Bay Beach on Beef Island, to be washed out to sea to fill in the hole caused by the dredging.

It is a great little beach with coconut and palm trees.
There is no access from land and the bottom make anchoring impossible but with good seas you can dinghy from Cam Bay or Marina Cay and enjoy your own version of "Cast Away".

This is a great area to tour by water, whether by sailboat, sea kayak or daysailor.

In early afternoon sail over to White Bay pass the reef markers and anchor on the left of bay across from the concrete structure or if you prefer pick up one of the new moorings on the east side in front of Ivan's.
Anchoring in Great Harbor can be somewhat tricky so make sure that you anchor has set properly.
An early start and a great sail to Anegada which should take you 1 1/2 hours to 2 hours, depending on the winds, from Mosquito Island.

While exploring apparently deserted Great Camanoe, we were welcomed by two of its residents, Ruth and Dr. Gerry Gordon.
Full-time living on Camanoe in the early seventies was an adventure.
The hardy souls who had chosen Great Camanoe as a permanent home banded together to persuade the Electricity Corporation to tap into its Virgin Gorda feeder (which crossed the island).

Ran into Tim and his wife Joan Shepard again, they were going to Great Camanoe to look at property.
Day is getting late, so we head for Jost Van Dyke and swing into Little Harbour, which was my first choice since it has Moor Seacure buoys, but it is deserted and seems a bit exposed in light of the winds and storms we've had for past few nights.
I head for Great Harbour to check it out, and it is a much prettier harbor with houses ashore and a deeper indentation.
