In 1976 a shortage of funds saw a public limited company, the Great Central Railway (1976) plc formed with the intention of selling shares in the line, which would be bought by enthusiasts and former railwaymen, and thus generating revenue.

 Great Central Railway through Leicester
As part of the, by then, nationalised British Railways (BR), the fortunes of the former Great Central Railway took a nose dive in the late 1950s when it was split between two regions of BR, the Midland and the Eastern regions.
The Great Central Railway (Nottingham) Ltd. between the northern outskirts of Loughborough and Nottingham Heritage Centre (at Ruddington, to the south of Nottingham).
These two railways are separated only by a gap across the Midland Main Line of Britain’s main railway network, to the north of Loughborough Central station, where a bridge and embankment were demolished in the late 1970s.

Altogether, Great Northern operated 21 sub-classes of the popular American or Standard type locomotive, which was used for switching as well as for freight and passenger service in earlier years.
Great Northern's L class (2-6-6-2) locomotives, built by Baldwin in 1906-07, were true Mallets.
This last of Great Northern's steam locomotives was presented to the Society in a ceremony on October 17, 1965.

The Great Central Railway (GCR) was the latter day name of a railway company of the United Kingdom which earlier was known as the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway (MS&LR).
The Great Central Railway was most famous for the former main line from London to Sheffield via the East Midlands often known as the London extension which was closed down as part of the Beeching Axe in the 1960s (see below).
In the 1923 grouping the Great Central Company was merged into the London and North Eastern Railway, which in 1948 was nationalised along with the rest of Britain's railway network.

The Southern Railway created numbering and classification systems for its large fleet of Electric multiple units that were perpetuated by the Southern Region of British Rail until the early 1980s, when the impact of TOPS was felt.
The LMS was principally reliant on steam locomotives, though it was the leader in testing new diesel locomotives in the 1930s and 1940s, and ordered the UK's first mainline diesel locomotives, 10000 and 10001.
The LNER used mainly steam locomotives for haulage, despite the fact that it inherited the North Eastern Railway's interests in DC overhead electric traction.

When the Great Central was discarded, with it went a high quality route for freight and passenger trains between these places, that avoided the complexities and delays of Birmingham.
The hulk of a small steam locomotive in a small park, somewhat worn by climbers and with a blank piece of steel welded across the place where the controls would be, threw a bizarre twist onto the immediate past.
In 1991 the Central Railway Group proposed a supergauge lorry on train freight link using the line, and this proposal, modified, is still being progressed after a defeat in parliament in 1996.

Even when the general public was skeptical or fearful of a new means of transportation, postal officials experimented with inventions that offered potential for moving the mail faster, occasionally suffering embarrassment, ridicule, or even abuse in the process.
Later, however, a steam locomotive reached the unheard-of speed of 30 miles an hour in an 1831 competition in Baltimore, and the dray horses used to power the first trains were eased out.
When railway mail service began, mostly letter mail was sorted on the cars, which were not equipped to distribute other kinds of mail.

The National Railway Museum’s Britannia class Pacific No 70013 Oliver Cromwell is to be restored to steam by 2008, ready to star in a 40 th anniversary celebration of that historic last journey.
Oliver Cromwell will be a star exhibit at the NRM’s Railfest celebration of 200 years of railways between 29 May and 6 June, after which it is expected to move to the Great Central Railway, Leicestershire, for restoration work to begin.
Steam Railway Magazine has launched a campaign to raise the £70,000 needed to pay for parts for the restoration and the appeal is being backed by a range of incentives for donors, including certificates, footplate rides, behind the scenes tours at the NRM and train tickets.

Southeastern Railway Museum, Duluth, GA #19 was built in 1924 for the Kentucky Lumber Company.
It was donated to the Atlanta Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society in July of 1962.

Only a handful of amateur cameramen were able to film the golden age of Britain's steam railway but some of those shots are shown here as we travel from Leicester, Derby, Loughborough, Nottingham, Grantham, Doncaster, York and then on to the Settle and Carlisle line.
Features some interesting locations on the Great Central, ECML and a short sequence on the Settle & Carlisle, however, the picture quality is very poor with much of the colour film looking like B&W. The only redeeming feature is that many numbers and nameplates are clearly visible.
Not recommended, unless you are desperate for live steam on any count; or railway station infrastructure/hardware in around 1960's, on a few ex LMS/LNER main stations, Midlands and North.

Three classic working steam trains will be travelling across the country for a series of new excursions organised by the National Railway Museum (NRM).
Giants of Steam will start in July with the established York to Scarborough route and then include new trips through the Yorkshire Dales to Carlisle, across the North Pennines and down the Tyne Valley to Newcastle, and later in the year to Kings Cross in London and back.
It is being restored at the Great Central Railway in Loughborough by members of the 5305 Locomotive Association.

 Chicago Area Steam
They have a history of providing a home to steam locomotives that for whatever reason were no longer wanted at their respective locations.
Two of the largest steam locomotives (at the time of my visit) at the Illinois Railway Museum are shown here.
Built specifically for New York Central's "Exposition Flyer" of 1893 and one of 62 locomotives displayed at Chicago's Columbian Exposition, it was the first vehicle in the world to exceed 100 miles per hour.
