	Great-crested Grebes
		Grebes were hunted almost to extinction in Britain when their plumage became a fashion accessory for Victorian women.
		Grebes were still in the process of making a recovery in the late 1960s when I joined our local naturalists' society.
		I later produced a grebe anorak badge for the society which, luckily, that was about it as far as my career as a fashion designer went.

		In the summer of 1992, and apparently for the first time, two pairs of splendid great crested grebes successfully bred on the river in the city centre rearing broods of young.
		Parent grebes assist the young to climb aboard by placing a foot along the surface of the water.
		It is difficult to appreciate that the highly ornamental great crested grebe was at one time in danger of extinction in Norfolk.

		It was founded in 1889 in England, initially to stop the use of grebe "fur"— the use of the plumage of the Great Crested Grebe on ladies' clothing to simulate real fur.

		Oddly, the illustration of two Great Crested Grebes engaged in courtship - a reasonably familiar sight in Britain - is one of the least successful plates.
		Hooded Grebes have a glorious white blaze on the forehead that is capped with a crown-like shock of orange-gold.
		A hallmark of the grebes are the broadly lobbed toes and flattened legs which they use to row themselves through the water, however, the feet are not shown in any of the paintings.

		The site is one of the most important in Wiltshire for breeding reed warblers and great-crested grebes, it also supports a wide range of dragonflies and damselflies and has botanical interest.
		The meadows are dominated by grasses such as crested dog's-tail (Cynosurus critatus), creeping bent (Agrostis stolonifera) and meadow foxtail (Alopecurus pratensis) but large areas of sedges (Carex spp) and rushes (Juncus spp also occur.

		In the west, a Slavonian Grebe was at Fort Victoria on 7th and a Black-throated Diver at Newtown NNR on 31st.
		Two Red-necked Grebes drifted east at SCP on 19th where an Iceland Gull on 17th was the rarest bird of the month.
		In the Puckpool/Seaview area there were three Great Northern Divers, a Red-throated Diver, 25 Great Crested Grebes, a Slavonian Grebe, 11 Red-breasted Mergansers, six Razorbills, a Common Scoter and a 1yr male Eider which flew in from the west and landed near St Helens Fort.

		At the peak of migration in mid-January this year there were a rich species diversity of migrants, the grebes, geese, shelducks, marsh ducks, diving ducks, rails, coots, stilts and sandpipers along with resident species, the grebes, cormorants, darters, herons, egrets, plovers, harriers and terns.
		The white on the face, neck, throat and breast, against the smooth fl crown with a suggestion of a crest and the pointed, long, flesh-pink beak clearly showed that the birds were great crested grebes in their non-breeding plumage.
		In the breeding plumage the crest though untidy and scattered is very prominent as is the cinnamon-coloured broad collar in the middle of the neck, offset by fl feathers lower down.

		Sightings were of two singles (5th and 14th), a group of four flying SW comprising two close pairs (9th), a pair north (21st) and a group of three including a pair 'tumbling' (29th).
		Seabirds were hard to find with a peak of just five Slavonian Grebes (7th) and 31 Eiders (7th).
		Single Razorbill (14th) and Great Northern Diver (7th) were seen, with a total of just three Common Scoters during the month.

		Along the northeast coast interesting seabirds included Red-necked Grebes at both Woodside and Seaview on 23rd, the latter remaining to the end of the month, Slavonian Grebes at Seaview (two) on 23rd and Woodside on 24th, and the Black-necked Grebe at Ryde throughout, whilst the one at Seaview was last seen on 1st.
		An Eider lingered at Woodside and a few Common Scoters were also noted along with peak counts of five Great Northern Divers, 47 Red-breasted Mergansers (Woodside to Seaview) and 22 Great Crested Grebes (Seaview).
		Seawatching on the south coast produced two Bonxies (SCP on 6th, Sandown on 31st), a Red-necked Grebe at Sandown on 9th, and large counts of 500 auks at Sandown on 4th and 1130 at SCP on 6th (the second largest for the county).

	Mid week walks reports 2004-5
		Nightingales were still singing well, Great Spotted Woodpeckers were briefly seen and Green Woodpeckers were heard calling.
		Many youngsters were seen, including a trio of young Great Crested Grebes hitching a lift on their parent's back.
		Several pairs of Goosander were showing well, as were a pair of Dunnocks which fed on the path in front of the group.

		The african subspecies of the Great Crested Grebe Podiceps cristatus infuscatus is limited to scattered populations in eastern and southern Africa.
		Great Crested Grebes were observed at only one lake, although records from the 1990s document them on four other crater lakes in the area.

		It is quite a small grebe (compare the Coot), though not as small as the Little Grebe.

		Later in spring this becomes a very good area for warblers, but none of those had come back as yet, and the dominant bird-song this windy sunny mild day was that of Chaffinches, Robins, and tits, with surprisingly often also the "compressed spiral" of the Short-toed Treecreeper.
		In the water along the path pairs of Mallards (often in the strange colour combinations of "farmers ducks") and aggressive coots clearly had spring in their minds, while the beautiful and surprisingly tame Great Crested Grebes freely demonstrated their eel-smooth diving technique, but not as yet their impressive displays.

	Lochwinnoch - The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds
		The visitor centre, with its viewing tower and telescopes, gives good views over the marshland and loch, where in the winter you may see a wide variety of wildfowl and goosanders.
		In the spring, great crested grebes and lapwings can be seen displaying and sedge warblers can be heard singing in the marshland.
		The reserve is ideal for all the family, as the trails, birdwatching hides and visitor centre are easily accessible.
