Curving around the Great Australian Bight, the route across the Nullarbor is legendary and one of Australia's great road journeys.
The highway stays close to the coast and there is always a little scrub and other vegetation on the plains or on the sand dunes that lie between the Highway and the ocean.
The Eyre Highway continues west, offering the option of continuing on the Great Eastern Highway straight on to Kalgoorlie and Perth, or head south towards Esperance.

Great Southern Highway is a highway in the Southern Wheatbelt region of Western Australia, starting from Great Eastern Highway at The Lakes, 50 km from Perth, and ending at Albany Highway near Cranbrook.
The highway initially travels east to the historic town of York, before following the Avon Valley and the railway roughly southwards until Narrogin.
The highway then runs parallel with Albany Highway at a distance of about 30 km through Wagin, Western Australia and Katanning, Western Australia before curving to approach Albany Highway where it ends 4 km past Cranbrook.

It is signed as National Highway 94 except for a 9 km stretch between the Great Eastern Highway Bypass and Roe Highway, and the 40 km section between Coolgardie and Kalgoorlie.
Two highways spur off Great Eastern Highway at various stages; at Perth's eastern metropolitan boundary the Great Southern Highway begins, which links Perth to such towns as York, Brookton, Narrogin, and Katanning, and 40km prior to arrival at Kalgoorlie the Coolgardie Esperance Highway begins, which serves, among others Norseman, Esperance, and the east of Australia.
At Greenmount Hill, the highway rises from the Swan Coastal Plain to the Darling Scarp at Greenmount.

Roe Highway, together with Reid Highway, is allocated State Route 3 and is part of National Highway 94 between Great Eastern Highway Bypass and Great Eastern Highway, and also part of National Highway 95 between Great Northern Highway and Great Eastern Highway.
Roe Highway was first proposed in 1955 by Gordon Stephenson as part of what was to become the Metropolitan Region Planning Scheme.
In 1994, the highway was extended 2 km further southwards from Tonkin Highway to Welshpool Road.

At the crest of the Darling Ranges, 40km from Perth and 7km south of the town of Mundaring on the Great Eastern Highway, is Mundaring Weir, a dam constructed in the 1890s to provide water for the Goldfields Water Scheme.
At the time, a desperate water shortage was hampering development of the Eastern Goldfields and the dam was part of the innovative solution devised by the colony’s chief engineer, C.Y. O’Connor, who planned to raise the water the 400km up to Kalgoorlie with the aid of a series of pumping stations.
Today, the Goldfields are still fed by an upgraded version of the pipeline and pumping stations which parallel the Great Eastern Highway to Kalgoorlie.

I was on a bus on Great Eastern Highway heading out of Perth when we stopped at some lights alongside a white 4WD.
The driver was right next to me and as I looked down at him he looked up at me. (This is not a love story, folks.) He was Caucasian and looked young, well 40ish.
