Transkei - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Transkei — which means the area beyond the Kei River — is a region situated in the Eastern Cape of South Africa.
The Transkei is bordered by the Umtamvuna River in the north and the Great Kei River in the south, while the Indian Ocean and the Drakensberg mountain range of the landlocked kingdom of Lesotho serve as the Transkei's eastern and western frontiers respectively.
The Transkei has many rivers flowing from the mountains to the oceans, so unlike much of South Africa, it is relatively unscathed by drought.

Dolerite sill and ring systems of the Great Kei catchment control to a large extent the morphology, the rain fall, the drainage pattern, the occurrence of many springs and therefore the geographic distribution of the local communities and their economic and social life.
The Qoqodola sill and ring system comprises several coalescing and overlapping saucer-shape dolerite rings (inner sill, outer sill, inclined sheet), forming an intrusive network which should be conducive to high yielding fractured aquifers at various depths and the emergence of many springs.
The deeper, sub-horizontal fracture zone associated with the relatively thin dolerite 'offshoot' may only be weakly connected to the overlying fracture network and, if this is the case, could be considered as separate aquifer layer.

One of the key issues for the future of the project was the availability of a cost effective, environmentally acceptable source of water.
The study concluded that the preferred option is to abstract water from the Great Kei River during the wet months of the year, store it in an off-channel dam and gravity feed it into the operation.
Since a water supply of this nature has potential benefits for local and regional communities, consideration is being given to the best way to meet the needs of the mining operation while maximising the domestic and agricultural benefits in the region.
