  Khingan - LoveToKnow 1911
(I) Great Khingan is the eastern border ridge of the immense plateau which may be traced from the Himalaya to Bering Strait and from the Tian-shan Mountains to the Khingan Mountains.
As a border ridge of the Mongolian plateau, it possesses very great orographical importance, in that it is an important climatic boundary, and constitutes the western limits of the Manchurian flora.
These escarpments are pierced by the Yellow River or Hwang-ho south of the Great Wall, between 38° and 39° N., and in all probability a border range homologous to the Great Khingan separates the upper tributaries of the Hwang-ho (namely the Tan-ho) from those of the Yang-tsze-kiang.

On the N. it is bounded by the frontier of Russia, beginning at Mount Kalas or Kanas (49° 5' N., 87° 40' E.) in the Altai, and running to the S.E. corner of Transbaikalia in the vicinity of Dalai-nor, thus having on the N. the Siberian provinces of Tomsk, Yeniseisk, Irkutsk and Transbaikalia.
Geographically, Mongolia may thus be said to occupy both terraces of the great plateau of east Asia, which stretches in the south of Siberia, between the Sailughem range of the Great Altai and the Great Khingan - with the exception of the Dzungarian depression.
South-eastern Mongolia is the part of Mongolia which lies on the eastern slope of the Great Khingan Mountains, entering like a wedge between the lower course of the Nonni river and the middle Sungari.

All the north-western part is occupied by a high plateau, bordered by the Great Khingan range, whose exact position in the region is not yet definitely settled.
Next comes a belt of fertile plateaus bounded on the east by the Little Khingan, or Dusse-alin, a picturesque well-wooded range, which stretches in a north-easterly direction from Kirin across Manchuria, is pierced by the Amur, and continues on its left bank, separating the Bureya from the Amgun.
The great engineering difficulties in building a railway along the Amur induced the Russian government to obtain from China permission to build a railway through Manchuria, but the project for a railway from Khabarovsk to Stryetensk received imperial sanction in the summer of 1906.

 Gobi Desert - Gurupedia
Between Urga (48°N. and 107°E.) and the little lake of Iren-dubasu-nor (111° 50'E. and 43° 45'N.) the surface is greatly eroded, and consists of broad flat depressions and basins separated by groups of flat-topped mountains of relatively low elevation (500 to 600 ft.), through which archaic rocks crop out as crags and isolated rugged masses.
As the border-range of the Khingan is approached the country steadily rises up to 4500 ft. and then to 5350 ft. Here small lakes frequently fill the depressions, though the water in them is generally salt or brackish.
The prevailing winds blow from the W. and N.W. and the pall of dust overhangs the country as in the Takla Makan and the desert of Lop.

Russian army Boxer Rebellion Kersnovskii Linevich Rennenkampf Stessel Peking Manchuria Kirin Taku Alekseev
Unsuccessful wars with France (1882-1885) and Japan, accompanied by territorial losses and followed by deep penetration of China by foreign interests, kindled hatred in China’s ruling classes for the “foreign devils.” The spirit of this movement was expressed by “Great Fists” athletic organizations, which is to say boxing societies, hence their name Boxers.
This column crossed the border on 13 July, occupied Khailar on the 21st, and on 10 August seized positions at Great Khingan in a double-pincer movement.
The Tsitsihar march and raid on Kirin gained a great reputation for General Rennenkampf—a reputation the would subsequently prove to be, alas, greatly exaggerated.
