Kung Lao is the last known descendant of the Great Kung Lao, a former Champion of Mortal Kombat, who lost the title to Goro 500 years previously, resulting in Lao's death at Goro's hands and the start of Shang Tsung's rule over the tournament.
Kung Lao was originally the one to represent the Shaolin in the Mortal Kombat tournament but he declined, knowing of the consequences of becoming champion.

Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance Kung Lao FAQ - IGN FAQs
Now whether this is the same Kung Lao, or how they know each other, don't ask me. Kung Lao is Shaolin Monk, as is very evident by his styles, Shaolin Fist, and Mantis which is derived from all of the animal styles the Monks came up with.
Kung Lao is one of the most well rounded characters on the game, which is probably why he is my character of choice (other than being a total badass).
Kung Lao almost has 2 modes, Mantis which is more of finesse, out maneuver your opponent unless you eventually slip by a strike or get a combo off in the opening, is offset well by Shaolin Fist.

 Laozi (Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy)
The earliest strand revolved around the meeting of Confucius with Lao Dan and was current by the fourth century B.C.E. During the first half of the third century, Lao Dan was recognized as a great thinker in his own right and as the founder of a distinct “Laoist” school of thought.
The fact that Lao Dan appears favorably in both Confucian and Daoist sources seems to argue against the likelihood that the figure was fabricated for polemical purposes.
Lao Dan is but one manifestation of the divine Laozi, albeit a pivotal one because of the writing of the Daodejing, which in religious Daoism commands devotion as a foundational scripture that promises not only wisdom but also immortality and salvation to those who submit to its power.

Nei Jia kung fu overview on Chiflow: Taijiquan, Xingyiquan, Baguazhang and Qigung
It is possible to view Nei Jia Kung Fu either as something discovered by one person at the turn of the last century or as a centuries old search to discover the power of the internal aspects of human potential.
Nei Jia kung fu practice often does not "look" martial; perhaps it does not look martial enough to be commercial or to support a viable school.
A key part of the failure to pass on the art of Nei Jia kung fu probably involves "secret knowledge." Some teachers tout what they refer to as secrets in an attempt to shroud the art in mysticism or as a scheme to control their students.

He was a great human being with deep thoughts, not a weirdo whose sayings are enigmatically and elliptically represented by numerous interpreters.
Legends vary, but scholars place his birth between 600 and 300 B.C.E. Lao Tzu is attributed with the writing of the "Tao-Te Ching," (tao-meaning the way of all life, te-meaning the fit use of life by men, and ching-meaning text or classic).

Gamerz-Edge Mortal Kombat Shaolin Monks Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
Shaolin Monks is a great step in the Mortal Kombat series, hopefully from now on we'll see two separate MK games from now on, a fighting one and a brawler style one.
I'm also reminded of something that was handy about Kung Lao's spin move--if you have a friend playing as Liu Kang and you start to do the spin, Kang can shoot fire balls at Kung Lao and they'll deflect and fire off in a star like pattern, hitting anything else in the room.
There are also a great deal of secrets in the game, so keep your eyes peeled; sometimes it's just the matter of the two of you stepping onto two floor plates; other times you have to throw an enemy into some part of the environment.
