The lake basin, a landform in which a block of the Earth’s crust dropped down between blocks that rise on either side, began to form nearly 25 million years ago as part of the Great Rift Valley (NASA, 1985).
This east-looking photograph features Lake Tanganyika, the second deepest freshwater lake in the world with a maximum depth of 1436 m and the longest lake in the world, stretching 660 km north to south.
The lake, bordered on either side by steep slopes, fills a long narrow trough in the western arm of Africa’s Great Rift Valley and supports a thriving fishing industry.

The brutal war in Burundi is increasingly involving other countries in Central Africa, and the United Nations tribunal for Rwanda should be expanded to include serious crimes being committed in Burundi, Human Rights Watch said in a new report Burundi: Neglecting Justice in Making Peace.
Human Rights Watch condemned the killing of civilians in Uganda, including the recent murders of eight foreign tourists and four Ugandan park officials by ethnic Hutu rebels.
The rebel group which is suspected in the killings of the eight foreign tourists has been active in Southwestern Uganda for more than a year, and according to local news reports has been responsible for numerous attacks on local villagers.

 CNS STORY: Peace efforts seen making progress in Africa's Great Lakes region
YAOUNDE, Cameroon (CNS) -- As peace makes slow progress throughout Africa's Great Lakes region, the Catholic Peacebuilding Network, or CPN, met in Bujumbura, Burundi, to discuss ways to promote peace and prevent the outbreak of war and conflict.
The Third International Conference of the Catholic Peacebuilding Network came at a critical time for Africa's Great Lakes region, which includes Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo, among others.
Participants from 20 countries, including Rwanda, Congo, Uganda, Colombia, the Philippines, Croatia, South Africa, Mozambique, Nigeria, Germany and the United States, gathered for the conference in Bujumbura from July 24-28.
