The significant input sources are precipitation onto the lake; runoff carried by streams and channels from the lake's catchment area; groundwater channels and aquifers, and man-made sources from outside the catchment area.
A periglacial lake is one in which part of its margin is formed by an ice sheet, ice cap or glacier, the ice having obstructed the natural drainage of the land.
A lake may be deposited with sediment, and gradually, the lake becomes a wetland, such as a swamp or marsh.

Lake Michigan fish consumers ate on average 88 fish meals (range 24-208) of all types in the previous 12 months, while Lake Huron fish consumers ate 72 fish meals (range 12-152).
Lake Michigan fish consumers had the highest total PCBs, with an average of 8.6 ppb, and Lake Erie had the lowest with 2.2 ppb.
Levels of most compounds were similar in Lake Michigan and Lake Huron fish consumers; however, Lake Michigan anglers had higher PCB and chlorinated pesticide residues than the Lake Huron subgroup, and Lake Huron fish consumers had higher levels of dioxin and furan congeners.

Water levels in the Great Lakes have risen this year so that today all lakes except Lakes Michigan and Huron are at or above their long term mean levels.

Milestone: Investigate causes and ecological consequences of blue-green algal blooms in areas of the Great Lakes heavily infested with zebra mussels.
Blooms of Microcystis, a potentially toxic blue-green algae, have appeared in recent years in the Great Lakes in areas heavily infested with zebra mussels.
We have not seen blooms in these parts of the lakes since the 1970s, when these same areas exhibited the effects of severe cultural eutrophication caused by phosphorus loading.

Aromatic Hydrocarbons
One of the major goals of the Great Lakes Action Plan is to actively accumulate and assess toxicological information on persistent toxic substances found in the Great Lakes basin.
The Great Lakes Water Quality Board of the International Joint Commission (IJC) has developed a list of 11 critical pollutants from the nearly 400 chemical contaminants that have been identified in the Great Lakes basin.
As part of Health Canada's commitment to the Great Lakes Action Plan, a biomarker-related review was conducted for three major classes of environmental contaminants--organochlorine pesticides, toxic metals, and halogenated aromatic hydrocarbons--which incorporate the 11 critical pollutants.

BOWLING GREEN, O. -- Great Lakes and Toledo architectural history are the subjects of books honored at the 19th annual Conference on Local History, presented Thursday (April 3) by Bowling Green State University's Center for Archival Collections.
Published in 2001 by Michigan State University Press, "The Sixty Years' War for the Great Lakes, 1754-1814" is a compilation of 20 essays taken from papers presented at a 1998 conference of the same name at BGSU.
Specifically, she cited the book's completeness in addressing the military, economic, political and cultural issues among the four groups who vied for control of the Great Lakes at the time-the British, French, Americans and Native Americans.

 Chance-Vought SB2U Vindicator, by Jack McKillop
The Great Lakes Aircraft Corporation proposed a two seat biplane based on their BG-1 dive-bomber; the new aircraft was basically a BG-1 with retractable landing gear.
The squadron began the transition from the Great Lakes BG-1 to the Vindicator in May 1941 and was redesignated VMSB-131 on 1 July 1941.
The aircraft was found in 130 feet (39.6 m) and raised in the 1990's and, as of April 1999, has been restored and is on display in the West Wing of the museum.
