  Friends of Arlington's Great Meadows - FOAGM
The Friends of Arlington's Great Meadows are committed to the protection and stewardship of this valuable natural landscape with the participation of members and town officials of the communities of Arlington, Lexington and the surrounding region.
Arlington’s Great Meadows is adjacent to the bikeway in East Lexington and is the largest area of open space in either Arlington or Lexington, but is owned by the Town of Arlington.
Great Meadows was purchased by Arlington in 1871 to serve as a supplementary water storage area, but was only briefly used for that purpose.

Great Meadows National Wildlife Refuge is composed of valuable freshwater wetlands flanking 12 miles of the Concord and Sudbury Rivers.
River meadows and plains were burned over to provide cropland and pasture for game, and the waters provided fish in great quantity for both food and fertilizer.
The dam caused the river's water level to rise and to extend into the meadows: the resulting wetland environment was too moist to support the prized hay crop, and thus was considered useless.

 HIKING GREAT PIECE MEADOWS
Great Piece Meadows lies to the north of Troy Meadows.
Part of ancient Lake Passaic; the Passaic Meadows includes the Great Swamp, Black Meadows, Troy Meadows, Hatfield Swamp, Lee Meadows, Little Piece Meadows, Great Piece Meadows, and Bog and Vly Meadows (much of it drained to create Lincoln Park).
The two largest remaining wetland complexes in the Passaic River Basin are the 4275 acre Great Piece Meadow owned by various private parties and the 3100 acre Troy Meadows owned by Wildlife Preserves Inc. The latter has indicated the need to sell soon.

 Pequest River in New Jersey
Thousands of years ago, after the last glacier, the place was at first a lake, and then a swamp that became a lake again after every rainfall or snowfall.
Bowser recommended that the river obstructions at Vienna be cut open to prevent damming and the rest of the river through Great Meadows be deepened an additional three to five feet.
Below Great Meadows the river and Route 46 run side by side almost all the way to Belvidere where the Pequest joins the Delaware.
