The loon or diver is a type of aquatic bird found in many parts of North America and northern Europe.
These were previously considered the most ancient of the northern hemisphere bird families, but it has recently become clear that the Anseriformes (ducks, geese and swans) and the Galliformes (the pheasants and their allies) are older groups.

The Great Northern Diver overwinters and spring and autumn migrants include geese, waders, shearwaters and the Pomarine Skua.
Red-throated Diver, Tufted Duck and Coot live on the loch year-round and Raven are resident in the forest.

Great Northern Diver is by far the most abundant diver species here in Cork,with Red-throated also occurring in decent numbers,albeit less widely distributed.Black-throated is a scarce(but probably annual) visitor to the county:I've yet to see one here!
Despite the northern bias to records of White-billed Diver,the first Irish record was at Lough Hyne(near Skibbereen) in 1974,but there hasn't been a county record since,unsurprisingly.
Great Northern Diver is probably my favourite bird in Iceland if I'm pushed to name one.

After hearing this juvenile was back at the reservoir I thought I would try and get some images.
On a beautiful morning (blue skies and everything) I arrived and sat on the waters edge and watched the bird swim in the middle of the reservoir for over an hour before it headed towards the northern edge.
I timed how long the diver submerged itself and was happy that whilst it was under water I had about 30 seconds to move closer and then stop.

Three Red-throated Divers and a Brent Goose flew past off the Bill and a single Common Scoter was in Portland Harbour.
Elsewhere there were 3 Black-necked Grebes, 2 Black-throated and a Great Northern Diver, an Eider and a Goldeneye in Portland Harbour, and a single Black Redstart at Reap Lane.
Two Black-throated and 2 Great Northern Divers were in Portland Harbour along with a Mute Swan and a Common Scoter, and 7 Little Egrets were at Ferrybridge.

November highlights were Great Northern Diver Whooper Swan, Garganey, Red-crested Pochard, Long-tailed Duck, Knot, Little Stint, Ring-billed Gull, Shorelark Rock Pipit and Brambling.
A Great Northern Diver was reported by several birdwatchers on 29th, however it couldn’t be relocated, further details would be welcome.
Wildfowl counts were 27 Little Grebe on 16th, 15 Great Crested Grebe on 16th, 38 Cormorant on 16th, 30 Barnacle Geese on 9th with smaller counts on several other dates.

December highlights were Red-throated Diver, Great Northern Diver, Red-crested Pochard, Common Scoter, Hen Harrier, Peregrine, Bar-tailed Godwit, Common Sandpiper, Knot, Mediterranean Gull, Caspian Gull, Yellow-legged Gull, Iceland Gull and Raven.
A juvenile Red-throated Diver was observed at 15:50 hrs on the 16th and briefly the following morning, the first record since December 1993.
Unlike the brief visit of the Red-throat the Great Northern Diver continued its stay and remained all month, giving excellent views from beside the dam.
