  Great Northern Highway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Great Northern Highway is a Western Australia highway extending from Perth to the Northern Territory border.
At a distance of 3250 km, it is the longest stretch of the National Highway.
It is signed National Highway 95 until Port Hedland, about 1640 km from Perth and National Highway 1 (part of the Highway 1) for the remaining stretch until Northern Territory border.

From Derby two routes to the rugged interior of the Kimberley are south to the Great Northern Highway then west; or immediately west along the unsealed Gibb River Road, which links Derby and Wyndham.

The Great Northern Highway is a more direct route running inland through Western Australia, while the North West Coastal Highway follows the coast along.
North of the Avon Valley you pass the Chittering Valley before joining the Great Northern Highway from where you can continue north to New Norcia, which was established as a Spanish Benedictine.

This small stone church was built in 1887 to hold 80 people, and at least 117 are buried in the churchyard.
The Museum opened in September 2002 and is located on Great Northern Highway in Bindoon Townsite adjacent to the Shire office.
The museum was donated to the people of Chittering by former residents Toppy and John Dickerson and represents 40 years of collecting with many items relating to the pioneer Glover family of Mooliabeenie.

For a quick round trip one year we traveled from Katherine to the Bungles via the Buchanan highway (Kalkaringi) to Halls Creek WA, then North along the Great Northern Highway returning to the Territory via Kununurra.
The highways are usually empty and dusty out here, so never fail to ensure you have ample supplies in case of breakdown.
Over the years they have become a major tourist destination, mainly from the air with scenic flights from the regions towns as the road still requires 4 wheel drive vehicle access.
