Wars are primarily about fighting and killing, but it would be a great oversimplification to state that that is all they are about.
Wars can set about vast changes in society, be switching points in history, can be begetters of social movements and the origin of future problems.
Essentially, both the conflicts that lay at the origin of the Great War as well as the newly created enmities resulting from the Great War remained unresolved and led to a continuation of the great struggle of nations some 20 years later.

However, Sweden was unable to support and maintain her army when the war was prolonged and the costs of warfare could not be passed to occupied countries.
Denmark was defeated in the summer of 1700 in what was to be the first major battle of the war, and so badly beaten that she could not participate in the war for a number of years.

During the 30-years war Sweden had became a great power and it occuppied large territories in Livonia and Estonia along the Baltic coast and in Finland.
Russia, at the beginning of Peter the Great's reign, was territorially a huge power, but with no access to the Black Sea, or to the Baltic Sea, and to win such an outlet became the main goal of Peter's foreign policy.
Peter formed a great alliance with Saxony / Poland (Poland was at that time joined in a Union with Saxony) and Denmark, which started the Northern War in 1700.

The old idea that wars should pay for themselves in the form of reward to the victors and that victory was natural for one's own side, was still alive in Sweden.

This left Peter the Great free to invade Ingria, where he defeated a Swedish army at the battle of Errestfer (7 January 1702), then at the battle of Hummselsdorf (18 July 1702), gaining control of the Neva Valley.
The war took another twist in October 1710, when Charles XII, still in Turkish Moldavia, pursuaded the Turks to declare war on Russian, and a 200,000 strong Turkish amry was sent to the border.

But I think really that the GNW was the last systematic use, by choice rather than lack of some thing else.
To mark the release of the rules, all of the GNW army packs have been reformatted to fit in with the Polemos basing system.
Polemos GNW and the packs can be obtained in Canada from Milites Minimus, and in the U.S.A from Heritage Studios.
