Great tits returned to the feeder within a few minutes and began to approach the owl, and there was no increase in plasma corticosterone levels in birds sampled 30–50 min after they first saw the owl.
Great tits exposed to the owl changed their behaviour immediately, and spent most of the time when the owl was visible flying around the aviary and hanging from the roof, with very few visits to a feeder.
The great tits responded to the sight of the owl with a marked increase in plasma corticosterone levels, whereas there was no change in corticosterone levels (mean levels < 11 ng/ml) in birds exposed to the brambling or to the moving box.

Auk, The: Variation in the number of spermatozoa in Blue Tit and Great Tit eggs
For the Great Tit, we analyzed a total of 94 eggs from 26 females (52 eggs from 21 clutches on Jomfruland, and 42 eggs from 5 clutches in Maridalen).
One Great Tit clutch from Maridalen was exceptional in that all seven eggs seemed to lack spermatozoa entirely; no spermatozoa were trapped in the eggs, and two eggs each had a single hole in the inner perivitelline layer (one on the blastodisc) that might have been caused by spermatozoa.
For Great Tits, the mean correlation coefficient was not significantly different from zero (r = -0.20, t = -1.07, df = 3, P = 0.36), butwith the small sample of only four clutches (excluding the infertile clutch), we cannot rule out the possibility that a negative relationship also existed in this species.

Seasonal decline in health status of Great Tit Parus major nestlings   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Seasonal variation in offspring survival and recruitment rate in birds may be mediated by immune function as it defines the ability of individuals to protect themselves against parasites and infectious diseases.
To investigate the relation between hatching date and health status of great tit nestlings, two blood parameters (leukocyte level and haematocrit) were estimated.
We suggest that the commonly observed decline in juvenile survival with the progress of the season may be at least partly attributed to seasonal changes in health status.
