Great Trek, migration of Afrikaners, or Boers, from the Cape of Good Hope into what is now the northern part of South Africa, beginning in 1835 and lasting into the early 1840s.
The Afrikaners, most of whom were of Dutch descent and spoke Afrikaans, became restless under British rule, which had been imposed on them in 1806.

In South African history, the Great Trek was an eastward and north-eastward migration of the segment of Afrikaners (known as Boers or Boere (Dutch/Afrikaans for "farmers")), who as descendants primarily of immigrants from western mainland Europe, lived a semi-nomadic pastoralist life in the eastern frontier region of the Cape.
The Great Trek was mainly the result of the "bursting of the dam" of pent up population migration and population pressures, as Trekboer migrations eastward had come to a virtual stop for at least three decades (though some Trekboers did migrate beyond the Orange River prior to the Great Trek).
The Great Trek signalled the determination of Dutch-speaking farmers (Boers) to find a 'Promised land' where they would be 'free and independent', beyond the limits of British control.

While some historians claim that these series of migrations, later known as the Great Trek, was caused because the Boers did not agree with the British restrictions on slavery, most Trek-Boers did not own slaves, unlike their more affluent cousins in the western Cape who did not migrate or participate in the Great Trek.
The Great Trek was mainly the result of the "bursting of the dam" of pent up population migration and population pressures, as Trek-Boer migrations eastward had come to a virtual stop for at least three decades (though some Trek-Boers did migrate beyond the Orange River prior to the Great Trek).
During the great trek they fought with the Zulus (after Voortrekker leaders Piet Retief and Gerhard Maritz, along with almost half of their followers, were killed by Dingaan and his warriors after initially signing a land treaty with them), who at the time occupied the areas the Boers were trekking into.

Northward ‘Ho’ the Wagons! The Great Trek of South Africa By John Tiffany   (Site not responding. Last check: )
The Great Trek or Voortrek is the central event in the history of South Africa, beginning in the mid-thirties of the 19th century and petering out in the early forties.
The migration called the Great Trek was a deliberate move by thousands of men and women, frontier farmers for the most part, who left hearth and home in their ox-drawn covered wagons, similar to the American Conestogas, at great personal sacrifice to put as much distance between themselves and the tyrannical British government as possible.
The Great Trek had begun, and a goodly portion of one of the two white tribes of southern Africa was on the move.

- the Great Trek was seen as the consequences of the pernicious influence of Exeter Hall (this was the auditorium in London where the anti-slavery organisations and Aborigines Protection Society held their large rallies and meetings) and the meddling of ignorant do-gooders in Whitehall who had no understanding of the ‘realities’ in South Africa.
The Great Trek into the interior, they argued, was mainly an attempt to reestablish the old ways and slavery again.

FMS: Feature [Boldly Gone: The Final "Star Trek" Score – Jon Burlingame]
The Star Trek series were among the few weekly shows left in American television to consistently use an orchestra, and McCarthy's deft handling of the music was a significant but underrated factor in providing pace, excitement and emotional content on all four series.
Nine of Star Trek's 16 Emmy nominations in the music categories have been for McCarthy scores, and he is the only Trek composer to have won twice: for the "Unification" score in TNG's 1991-92 season, and for the main title theme of DS9 in 1992-93.
At the same time one sensed an undeniable melancholy in the knowledge that this was the end of a long odyssey, for both the creators of the many great Trek scores and for the series themselves.
