The Great Western Highway is a highway in New South Wales, Australia.
The section of road across the Blue Mountains to become the Great Western Highway was built by William Cox in 1815 shortly after a viable route across the mountains was discovered and surveyed, and as such is one of the oldest sections of road in Australia.
In 1994 the highway was terminated at Emu Plains with the closure of the Knapsack Gully Viaduct.

Great Western, a sidewheel steamer, was built at Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1857 and was purchased by the War Department 10 February 1862.
Great Western was used as an ordnance boat for the Navy on the western waters, and in that capacity operated from Cairo, Ill., to various points on the Mississippi and its tributaries.
Following the fall of Vicksburg, Great Western continued her duties as supply ship for the squadron, being stationed at Skipwith's Landing, Miss., and Goodrich's Landing, La. In July 1864 she was sent back to Cairo to act as a receiving ship.

It starts at Bathurst New South Wales, where it joins with the Great Western Highway over the Blue Mountains from Sydney.
The Mid-Western Highway is the most direct route between Sydney and Adelaide, however since the Hume Highway has been improved, the route via the Hume Highway and Sturt Highway through Wagga Wagga is probably superior.

An analysis by motoring group the NRMA has found state Budget funding for the Great Western Highway has dropped by $12 million compared to last year.
The Nationals' Member for Lachlan, Ian Armstrong, says there is $70 million in the Budget to upgrade country towns' water and sewerage schemes, but he estimates $400 million is needed to rectify current problems.
But Tom Murphy from the Western Research Institute at Charles Sturt University says the spending is too Sydney-centric and does not address the challenges ahead, particularly the commodity boom.
