Great Western steam locomotives - 'Castle' class index
On the 4-6-2 Pacific theme, the Great Western's one and only attempt, The Great Bear of 1908, was not technically a failure, but its weight reduced route availability to such an extent that gave little scope for operational research on a one-off locomotive.
One main object of the 'Kings' was to cut journey times, for example, of the Cornish Riviera between Paddington and Plymouth to four hours flat.
The last of the 171 'Castles', which included 15 members of the 'Star class rebuilt as 'Castles' and the rebuild of the only Great Western Pacific The Great Bear, was number 7037 and was named Swindon by HRH Princess Elizabeth (as she then was) on a visit to Swindon works in 1950.

Though this appeared to be a great coup for the GWR, the coal traffic declined significantly as the use of coal as a naval fuel declined, and within a decade the GWR was itself the largest single user of Welsh coal.

The Great Western, which did not want a break in their system at Gloucester, was also eager to buy up the two independent railways; but the Midland outbid them and the broad gauge suffered a severe reverse.
When the war was finished, the railways, the lines, the rolling-stock and plant which had been requisitioned by the Government were handed back to their owners, and a measure of compensation presented for the loss they had inevitably sustained.
The effect of the grouping of the Great Western's mileage was to increase it by 560 geographical miles, and by 3,365 miles of single track, sidings included, as the system already covered very thoroughly the country between the London-Penzance line on the south and the London-Birmingham-Chester route in the north.

Shattering the Silences: THE CULTURE WARS AND THE GREAT CONVERSATION
The great sin of the Great Books, it seems, was the insistence of Hutchins and his followers that in America everyone should have the kind of education reserved in more formally hierarchical societies for the offspring of the ruling class.
And the students in those universities ("The president and the students are wonderful," Hutchins remarked of the University of Chicago, "but the faculty are a bore") were overwhelmingly Euro-American and it was not a priority in those days to attract Native American, Hispanic, African American, or Asian American youngsters to the campus.
Ann Maxwell Hill of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, in a paper given at the 1995 meetings of the American Anthropological Association, recounts her own odyssey as a student at Columbia and a teacher at Oberlin and Dickinson of the introductory course in anthropology.
