Wyrley faced a Willenhall Town Juniors side who lay second in Division 3 having been beaten only once in the league since their arrival from Division 2 at the beginning of the season.
The Wyrley defence in particular were unnerved by the pace of the Willenhall attack and too readily conceded territory.
However, Wyrley were much more combative in the second half and showed that they could put together some good moves on a pitch which was anything but conducive to good football.

Great Wyrley is a township, containing about 800 inhabitants, and a long village of detached houses, two miles S of Cannock and six miles N by W of Walsall.
Wyrley & Essington Canal was cut under an act passed in 1792, chiefly for the purpose of affording a cheap transit for the coal got in this neighbourhood.
Great Wyrley church, St Mark, is a handsome stone building which was erected in 1845-6, in the early English style.

 Lichfield and Hatherton Canals Restoration Trust Ltd
In 1792 an Act of Parliament was passed authorising a canal from Wolverhampton to the collieries at Wyrley Bank and Essington, with a branch to Birchills near Walsall.
In 1794 the Wyrley and Essington Canal Company passed a supplementary Act which enabled them to extend their line to Brownhills and then descend through 30 locks to Huddlesford on the Coventry Canal with a branch to the Hay Head Limeworks (Daw End Branch) and a short branch to Lords Hayes.
The main line of the Wyrley and Essington Canal was originally a contour canal (hence the local nickname "Curly Wyrley") but since it was built it has been affected by the subsidence of the mines which it was built to serve.

Great Wyrley Community Band was formed in January 2000.
This came about when Lawrence Smallwood (former Head of Music at Great Wyrley High School), and Vaughan Smith (Musical Director), were called upon at the last minute to see if they could muster up a band to play at the Annual 'Carols & Roast' evening at St. Mark's Church, Great Wyrley.
Great Wyrley Community Band lives on today in Vaughan Smith's hands, and through his encouragement and hard efforts, the Band has gained a fantastic reputation for high standards, challenging pieces, and an excellent source of entertainment.

Because the canal is called the Wyrley and Essington it is usually thought that Essington was a major part of the route and the canal's success.
Straight away the BCN built a connecting line between the Walsall Canal and the Walsall branch of the Wyrley and Essington Canal in Walsall town Centre.A second connection, the Bentley Canal, was built between Wednesfield on the Wyrley and Essington Canal and Darlaston on the Walsall Canal's Anson Branch.
For many decades the Wyrley and Essington Canal continued to do well, this was especially due to the success of the Cannock Extension.However, in the early part of the 1900's trade began to drop back and by the end of WW2 the canal was making a big loss.

Wyrley Under 16s (Walsall) were awarded the Team of the Month by Wyrley Juniors Football Club for the period from Jan-Feb '03 following their three successive victories, all of which were achieved after coming from behind and one of which was concluded by a golden goal.
Wyrley made an early exit from the Sid Gutteridge cup when they went down to a 5-0 to a very impressive Erdington Star side at Forge Lane.
Wyrley showed great spirit in a closely fought pre-season friendly against Silverdale F.C. when they pulled back two goals to claim a 2-2 draw after being 2-0 down with goals from Matthew Anstey and Simon Casserley.

Lawrence Smallwood was the face of community music in Great Wyrley for many years.
He conducted the Great Wyrley High School Band and was the Musical Director of the Great Wyrley Operatic Society.
In the last few years of Lawrence's reign as Head of Music at GWHS the band appeared before Her Majesty the Queen in Hyde Park, entertained Princess Diana during her visit to Great Wyrley and engaged upon a "World Tour" (in the Mosel region of Germany!).

 William Crutchley
According to the 1841 record for Great Wyrley, William was an agricultural labourer, born in Staffordshire and his age is given as sixty.
Nevertheless, according to the 1851 census, Williams's year of birth, as given by William himself was 1778, which seems to tie in with the date from the 1841 census.
William Crutchley died of heart disease in Great Wyrley on November 12th 1859 at the age of 84.

Many residents in Great Wyrley have complained about the number of speed humps, the position of them and also the fact that they were not consulted.
The news of the campaign will be welcomed in Cheslyn Hay and Great Wyrley where councillors have recently complained that they are helping to fund the speed gun and yet it never seems to be used in the village.

Councillor Brian Wood said he had been inundated with letters from people against the plans for the housing and retail scheme on land bordering Streets Lane, Landywood Lane and Upper Landywood Lane between Great Wyrley and Cheslyn Hay.
He is now urging people not just to contact him but to put their objections in writing to South Staffordshire Council within the next three weeks.
