Greater Baton Rouge Business Report: We couldn't compete - Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport
Baton Rouge has a clear problem with the former, Wright says, since it's much closer to New Orleans than Tallahassee is to Jacksonville.
Tallahassee Regional Airport, considered mostly a business market, had been struggling with high fares just like Baton Rouge and was losing 30 percent of its passengers to Jacksonville 170 miles away.
Also, Baton Rouge is "leaking" fewer passengers to New Orleans than it once did--22 percent now compared to 33 percent in 1999 and 67 percent in 1995, even though Baton Rouge's population is migrating closer to the Crescent City.
