Census Metropolitan Area - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A census metropolitan area, or CMA is a Canadian census subdivision comprising a large urban area (known as the urban core) and adjacent areas (known as urban and rural fringes) that have a high degree of social and economic integration with the urban core.
Once an area becomes a CMA, it is retained as a CMA even if the population of its urban core declines below 100,000.
This new grouping is known as a consolidated CMA, and the component CMA and CAs are known as the primary census metropolitan area (PCMA) and primary census agglomeration(s) (PCA).

The area forms part of the mixedwood section of the boreal forest and consists of a patchwork of forest types, varying in size, age, and tree species, but consisting primarily of trembling aspen, paper birch, white and fl spruce, and balsam fir.
The area has retained its wilderness quality because, despite the fact that it is relatively close to large cities in Saskatchewan and is easily accessible, there are few roads within the area and not many people live there permanently.
The area should be protected from any human activity which decreases the biological diversity of the ecosystems in the area, and which is therefore not sustainable in the long-term.

While the project's main component is breeding wheat varieties with a greater degree of stem-solidness, which is a source of sawfly resistance, the ultimate goal is to use these varieties as part of integrated control strategies that take advantage of better overall sawfly knowledge.
Researchers have established that wheat with greater stem solidness reduces the sawfly population in several ways - eggs are crushed during egg laying, larvae have greater difficulty tunneling within solid stems and become malnourished, and females have reduced fertility the following spring.
The sawfly risk forecast for this year is similar to recent years, says Carcamo, with large areas of the western Prairies experiencing a moderate to severe infestation risk.

 Sustainable Small-Scale Nursery Production
Most new firms begin with only a few acres of production and initially market primarily within a 50-mile radius, unless growing for mail order or on contract.(1) Part of this market analysis includes finding out what crops other nurserymen have grown successfully in the region, and, secondly, what the competition is like.
The switch has occurred for several reasons: container-grown trees have a greater chance for survival and establishment after transplanting than do trees produced in the field; containerized production does not require good soil and takes up less acreage; and containerized stock enables the grower to extend the planting season.
A study conducted in the late 1990s found that "growth may be more effectively maximized by reducing moisture stress than by increasing fertilizer concentration".(10) This study, also conducted at Ohio State University, used fertilizer concentrations between 50 and 200 mg/L of nitrogen.
