Joni Mitchell, Dreamland; Neil Young, Greatest Hits - CD reviews - www.smh.com.au
Young's greatest hits here are, according to the sleeve notes, "based on original record sales, airplay and known download history", which, like an ARIA platinum award, means anything you like, really.
The fact is these songs are the best-known Neil Young tunes, the ones you will hear on classic rock radio, and come almost exclusively from 1969-78 with not a single song from the past 13 years.
Sensibly, Mitchell's collection is not called a greatest hits; crucially, she had a hand in the song selection; thankfully, it is a thoughtful collating of a career.

CD Review: Greatest Hits, Neil Young - Harvard Independent - Arts   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Neil Young seems like one of those figures left over from the '60s whom no one our age knows quite what to make of.
Fortunately for us, Neil Young came along at a time before reality TV and music videos, in that legendarily tumultuous era known as the '60s, when music was politics and rock-and-rollers still looked more sketchy than not.
From the late '60s through the early '90s, Young wrote and released a whole host of classic songs that people still listen to and respect to this day, working as an integral member of Buffalo Springfield; Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young; and, of course, Neil Young and Crazy Horse.

Neil Young: Greatest Hits: Pitchfork Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
Neil Young is the kind of man that appreciates albums in the traditional sense: cohesive beginning-to-end statements, occasionally thematic if the mood suits him, and preferably experienced through big analog speakers on crackly old vinyl.
Young's stubborn integrity extends beyond his politics-- which inform all of his songs, but only define a few like "Ohio" and "Rockin' in the Free World"-- and saturates his music.
Greatest Hits is obviously intended mostly for curious initiates or casual listeners (although the remastered tracks will likely attract hardcore Young fans, too), and it achieves its goals sufficiently.

Neil Young is something of an enigma...all at once a bit of a cranky prophet and also a tender hearted romantic.
Young is one of the few rock musicians who seems to take great pains to ensure clear and well-imaged recordings.
Young did not follow his own lyrics and so called "Words Of Wisdom" and just faded away which is why I give this album 5 stars.

Neil truly ranks as one of the greatest singer/songwriters of all time, and sits comfortably alongside Joni Mitchell and Van Morrison for exceptional creative longevity.
One of the most phenomenal aspects of Young's career is that he almost never writes and records material primarily to please a commercial audience.

 SOUNDTHESIRENS.COM - Review :: Neil Young - Greatest Hits
Young is far closer to Bob Dylan, whose greatest hits span three volumes.
Neil himself even realizes this, and, in his own cryptic way, apologizes for this half assed (and conveniently just in time for Christmas) cash in.
The line shows exactly how mechanical, half-hearted, and capitalistic this CD really is: “Greatest hits inclusion based on original records sales, airplay and known download history.” This is the biggest rock tragedy since “Baba O’Riley” was hawking SUVs; and a sad statement about the lack of heart in the recording industry today.

Neil Young News : The Greatest Greatest Hits Disc Ever?
To say that Neil Young's latest release - and probably his last on the Reprise label - is the greatest greatest hits package ever released might be your typical reviewer hype...
We're talking Neil Young here, unquestionably one of the most important and influential musicians of all time, so when we hear his songs over and over we are able to cull new meaning from them at new times in our life, and having these re-mastered marvels all in one place is certainly a plus.
In the case of 'Greatest', it brings me back to Harvest, when each beat-it-into-the-ground playing of Heart Of Gold invariably caused me to cringe, only serving to remind me of all the music that was left unnoticed, buried beneath the "star maker machinery" of AM/FM radio.

Cokemachineglow.com - Neil Young: Greatest Hits
For most acts, a Greatest Hits release seems like less an artistic retrospective of their favorite work than a collection of familiars for willing fans that can't be bothered to track down original releases just to skip over what they don't instantly recognize.
There might be more "authentic" Neil Young in "Ambulance Blues" than a thousand "Heart of Gold's," but every phase of Young's musical evolution has its place and its fans; besides, I doubt any of us started at "Borrowed Tune" and went from there.
To its biggest credit, Greatest Hits makes it easier for complete strangers of his work to become attached than any single disc or LP before it, and as such isn't as superfluous as this review might let on.

The Greatest Hits documents the finest work from an artist who has not only sold in excess of 45-million albums, but whose influence can be heard on countless major bands since, such as Pearl Jam, R.E.M. and Wilco.
Well, as a 5 star selection of Neil Young tracks there's little to fault this album - every one is top notch and together they cover a very fair cross-section of his often complex wanderings between folk, country and hard-rock.
Brilliant though it is, "Greatest Hits" makes the chances of this even more remote, which is a great shame because his best work covers much more than what's on offer here and, as such, deserves much better treatment.

For an artist as prolific as Neil Young, assembling a greatest hits set is like asking Hugh Hefner which of his girlfriends is most beautiful.
Covering territory from most of Young’s creative periods, excluding his experimental 80’s era and most of his 90’s work, Greatest Hits is pretty much a rehash of his popular radio songs that battle Boston and Bad Company for air time on classic rock radio.

The frequencies are comfortably uniform and the mix is warmer; in contrast, the standard CD version boosts the bass frequencies and attacks with the heat of contemporary album mastering.

 Neil Young Reviews
Neil Young has long been one of rock's great romantics, mourning the utopian ideals of the "hippie" '60s and his vision of what America was…or at least should have been.
It was a career move akin to "pissin' in the wind," as the artist himself describes life on one of the album's most famous lines.
Young had already recorded the harrowing Tonight's the Night, his indictment of '60s drug culture and the damage done, but his label rejected it as too abrasive.

The recent re-release of his lost ‘70s works means that he’s finally satisfied with digital technology and I have a feeling that the commercial capitulation of this single disc fart is probably a “thank you” to Warner Bros. for letting him drop the long-awaited Ex-Lax gastric blast sometime soon.

Neil Young: Greatest Hits   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
After Neil Young left the Californian folk-rock band Buffalo Springfield in 1968, he slowly established himself as one of the most influential and idiosyncratic singer/songwriters of his generation.
Young's body of work ranks second only to Bob Dylan in terms of depth, and he was able to sustain his critical reputation, as well as record sales, for a longer period of time than Dylan, partially because of his willfully perverse work ethic.
From the beginning of his solo career in the late '60s until the late '90s, he never stopped writing, recording, and performing; his official catalog only represented a portion of his work, since he kept countless tapes of unreleased songs in his vaults.
