In September 2004, thousands of South Africans took part in an informal nationwide poll to determine the "100 Greatest South Africans" of all time.
Votes were cast by telephone, SMS, and the website of the state-run South African Broadcasting Corporation television channel, SABC 3, which aired a series of profiles and documentaries in the weeks leading up to the announcement of the top 100.
In South Africa, the list was headed by Nelson Mandela, a predictable and highly-popular choice, given his global stature as a statesman and symbol of post-Apartheid liberation and reconciliation.

A large number of the nominees were controversial to say the least – entertainment icons recording more votes than national heroes, disgraced sports stars outscoring nation-builders and apartheid architects ranking higher than struggle stalwarts - surely not a true representation of our unique and varied nation.

Practically speaking, tens of millions of the people living in the new South Africa today owe so much to this man. To most South Africans, Tutu is not only a big icon of the anti-apartheid struggle but he remains a big source of inspiration in the building of the new South Africa.

It isn’t that I don’t actually care about the greatest 100 South Africans, it’s that I don’t think anyone is qualified to create such a list, and popular vote doesn’t ensure that those nominated are truly great.
This whole 100 great south africans thing was a cool idea till someone tried to develop it.
Well I thought the whole idea of what a great South African is was totally lost on a lot of people.
