Greeble extrusion heights are now 100% of the surface area by default, as opposed to 50% of the surface area in the previous version.
Greeble heights default to the surface area of the underlying surface.
Greebles are randomly rotated when placed; this value dictates the increment (in degrees) which a greeble may be rotated, from 0 to 90.

 Greeble -
Greeble is a great little plugin for 3dsmax written by Tom Hudson for procedurally generating detailed geometry on any mesh object.
Although it was originally created for detailing "Spaceship models, cityscapes and Death Stars", it is also particularly useful for testing global illumination speed and accuracy as it provides endless crevices and clefts for indirect illumination to interact within.
If you would like to download Greeble, you can find it on Tom Hudson's homepage.

Greeble can be found most often on the Midnight Ocean but occasionally shows up on Cobalt and Viridian.
Greeble started playing around June of 2004 and had the good fortune of being brought into The Sea Dogs by Piranne where he lived for over a year.
Greeble's favorite pastime continues to be leading pillages but since his life rarely affords him the opportunity he has recently started hunting Brigand Kings.

Greeble is a mesh modifier, so after installation you will find it in your modifier rollout.
If you want to edit individual buildings of your finished greeble city as "element" units, it is now the time to "Keep original geometry", as it will allow for detaching them individually from the base object w/o leaving holes later.
Since "select tops" was active in the preceeding greeble modifier, we can now easily alter all "roofs" of our buildings to use ID 4 (which is the dedicated roof material).

Greeble - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Greeble studies demonstrated that it is possible to train experts in a category in the laboratory in a matter of hours, so that some of the behavioral and neural effects typically obtained with faces but not objects can also be found in Greeble experts looking at Greebles.
In 3D computer graphics, greebles are often created automatically by specific software, because generating greeble involves a lot of precise, tedious, and repetitive work, and many consider it a task best suited to computers, particularly if a great degree of control is unnecessary or the greebles will not be particularly large on screen.
Most greeble generating software works by sub-dividing the surface to be greebled into smaller regions, adding some detail to each new surface, and then recursively continuing this process on each new surface to some specified level of detail.

 How Experience Shapes Vision
In the laboratory we have created experts for novel objects called “Greebles” and observed the behavioral (Gauthier and Tarr, 1997) and neural (Gauthier et al., 1999; Rossion et al., 2000) changes that occur with the onset of expertise.
Third, across Greeble expertise training, subjects show a significant positive correlation between a behavioral measure of holistic processing (sensitivity to the presence of the correct parts for that object) and neural activity in the right fusiform (Gauthier and Tarr, 2002).
This argument is based on studies using both Greeble and extant experts in domains as diverse as cars, birds, and chess.

So here is the results of my macro, it draws a greebled polygon (or in this case several polygons arranged in a square-torus), by subdividing the 4-pointed polygon into a grid, then using a bunch of funky rules to deform that grid.
This is what happens when I tell my greebling macro to displace the surface by a big amount, and I agree it kinda moves beyond the term greebling and needs a new word...

Will be nightmarish for large greeble sets, as your modeler will slow down significantly with so many unique objects, but would be nice for smaller sets where different greebles would get different textures.
The drawback to non-distorting greebles is that they don't distribute as randomly on "skewed" surfaces and triangles.
On such geometry, non-distorting greebles tend to gravitate toward the center of mass of the surface.

Meanwhile, Mac users, do not use the "greebles in separate objects" option until you can get version 1.1b, and you should be fine.

 Raw Greebles - An Experiment - Scifi-Meshes
Instead of having flat greebles to slap against a flat surface, I started building complete 3D machine parts that be rotated and attached to each other sort of like legos.
The real interesting feature of this setup is that by rotating any 1 greeble in a different direction, it looks very different, this makes it possible to reuse the same greeble over and over, with out it seeming too repetitive.
Most of these blocks of greebles were assembled in minutes, simply by selecting the face on a pipe end and duplicating it onto another pipe end.

I wanted to make the greebles interact, so that they were a unity rather than small mechanical elements.

Classic-Space LEGO: content / greebling: a closer look
As written in the greeble design commentary on Lugnet, “‘Greeble’ (also ‘greeblie’ or ‘greeb’) is the popular term to describe groupings of mechanical-looking detail elements on MOCs”.
Due to all of this there are a lot of things to have in mind when greebling (and it is furthermore, as we will see, based on very loose conventions), and this document is intended to provide an introduction to that world.
Greebles are essentially fantasy-elements – in the real world, spaceships would be unlikely to place mechanical elements exposed to radiation, weapon fire and whatnot.

 Greeble info
Like faces, Greebles are all similar because they have the same number of parts in the same configuration.Although they may have properties in common with faces (bilateral symmetry, organic-like characteristics) the Greebles are apparently not treated as faces by our visual system.
Greeble experts also activate their "fusiform face area" in the brain more than novices do (Gauthier, Tarr, Anderson, Skudlarski and Gore, 1999): this suggests that this part of the brain may be specialized for faces because of our experience with them, not because of some innate bias.
Greeble experts learn to discriminate rapidly between individuals within the same gender and family (different families have different body shapes), such as the two guys in the bottom row.

In a part recognition task we found that Greeble experts, but not Greeble novices, showed a pattern of configurable sensitivity similar to that observed for faces.
This common pattern indicates that it was the specificity of face recognition, not the class per se that led to enhanced activity in the face area.
In a second study we imaged Greeble novices and Greeble experts and found that the experts, but again not the novices, showed enhanced activity in the face area, even when this region was defined individually for each subject.

Members brought examples of greebles on both the top and the bottom of their models (or looking another way, studs-up vs. studs-down).
