However, the 1900 Summer Olympics were already planned for Paris and, barring the so-called Intercalated Games of 1906, the Olympics did not return to Greece until the 2004 Summer Olympics.
The true origin of the modern Olympics was acknowledged by De Coubertin as being in Much Wenlock, a rural market town in the English county of Shropshire.

In March 2004, DOD's European Command coordinated the participation of the U.S. Embassy in Athens, several components of the U.S. military, and members of the newly elected Greek government in a consequence management[Footnote 5] military exercise specifically tailored to address a theoretical terrorist attack on the Olympics.
Greece had received about $1.6 million in previous ATA Program assistance between 1986 and 2001, and, in preparation for the Olympics, received over $15 million in antiterrorism assistance between 2001 and 2004.
Whereas the 2004 Summer Olympics were mostly centered in and around the Greek capital city, where the United States had a large embassy presence and infrastructure in place to provide administrative and logistical support for the U.S. security efforts, the 2006 Winter Games are located in the remote northwest corner of Italy.
