Postage stamps and postal history of Greece - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Issued in 1861 with seven denominations ranging from one lepton to 80 lepta, they were initially printed in Paris ; in November 1861 the printing plates were transferred to Athens and subsequent printings made there.
The first stamps of Greece were the so-called " large Hermes heads ", a profile of the Greek messenger god Hermes in a frame strongly resembling that used for contemporary stamps of France.
In 1900, a variety of existing Greek stamps were surcharged with new values, some with a denomination by itself, or with "A M", meaning Axia Metalliki ("value in metal") for values based on gold currency, typically used for parcel post.

 Lepton
A lepton (Greek for "light", as opposed to hadrons which are "heavy") is a subatomic particle that is not made of quarks.
The leptons are the electron, the muon, the tau, and their respective neutrinos.
There are 6 types of lepton, 3 of which are negative, the other 3 neutral.

Martin Perl makes news in Newsday story today:
In the Standard Model, the tau lepton is part of a class of lightweight particles-called leptons after the Greek word for "light"-that includes the familiar electron and a somewhat heavier cousin called the muon.
For every trillion tau neutrinos that passed through the target, one would produce a tau lepton, which left a distinctive, kinked track in the emulsion about a millimeter long (or about the thickness of a paper match).
But to really look for the rare incidence of a tau neutrino hitting a nucleus and transforming into a tau lepton is a hard experiment to do." The experiment involved a collaboration of 54 physicists from the United States, Japan, Korea and Greece.

The Widow’s Mite coins are bronze leptons of Alexander Jannaeus, of the Hasmonian Dynasty, King of Judaea from 103-76 B.C. The word “mite” is the King James Version translation for the Greek word lepton (λεπτον).
Both the lepton and the prutah had the images of the anchor on one side and the star or wheel image on the other.
So while scripture references only the lepton, due to the commonalities of these two coins, both coins today are usually and commonly referred to as mites.

Doubts Concerning the Coins Over the Eyes
On examining the Filas lepton and the image on the Shroud, it is apparent that the letter at the end of the abbreviation for Tiberius is indeed the Greek letter Upsilon, which looks like a U with a small tail on it.
Our findings had previously shown the image of a Julia lepton directly over the center of the left eye, so that if their findings are confirmed, and they are both very competent and experienced investigators, then that would actually be the third identifiable coin.
The side of the lepton they report is the opposite of the one that we identified.

On examining the Filas lepton and the image on the Shroud, it is apparent that the letter at the end of the abbreviation for Tiberius is indeed the Greek letter Upsilon, which looks like a U with a small tail on it.
There are differences in which letters are used for transliteration of the Greek letters; some use IOY and others IOU for the same inscription.
The letters are not nearly so apparent on the 1978 photographs because some of the threads running through the right eye area apparently had been pulled or rotated during the 1973 showing of the Shroud, fragmenting the images somewhat.

Are there really Roman lepta coin images on the Shroud of Turin - some think so
Though the lepta (plural of lepton) minted in Palestine were Roman produced coins, the inscription of Tiberius Caesar would have been written in Greek as TIBERIOU KAISAROS.
Images of coins, minted by Pontius Pilate for use in Palestine, have been tentatively identified over both eyes of the man whose image is seen on the Shroud.
But such identification is highly interpretive and other researchers do not find the same level of congruence.
