The TREATY OF SEVRES (Aug. 1920) foresaw that Greek troops would continue to occupy the Smyrna region for 5 years, after which the regional government could request a plebiscite.
King Alexander had died in October 1920, and the royalists won the election.
The Greek population was weary of years of continued war.

The Treaty of Sèvres, signed with Turkey on August 10, 1920, gave Greece the Aegean Islands, hence command of the Dardanelles, and the eastern half of Thrace except for Constantinople.
In the winter of 1921, the Greek government decided on a military confrontation with the Turkish nationalist movement led by Mustafa Kemal (later known as Atatürk) which was growing in strength and threatening the Smyrna Protectorate.
After five years, a plebiscite would determine which country would have sovereignty.

Armenia became a separate republic under international guarantees, and Smyrna (now Izmir) and its environs was placed under Greek administration pending a plebiscite to determine its permanent status.
Atatürk's separate treaty with the USSR and his subsequent victories against the Greeks during the War of Independence forced the Allies to negotiate a new treaty in 1923 (Treaty of Lausanne).
